Keysha Wall and Lauren Kay, if elected in the upcoming Central Student Government elections, hope to use their positions to amplify the voices of minority students on campus to the University of Michigan administration. Wall, an Art & Design senior, and Kay, an LSA senior, are running for president and vice president, respectively, with the Defend Affirmative Action Party, the University’s longest-standing student political party.

Rania Daboul remembers having to call her older brother who was 6,000 miles away from her, anxiety building about her future.

She was stuck in Jordan, taking care of her three younger siblings while her parents were in the United States. There were a lot of times when Daboul felt as if she had no academic future and no possible way to accomplish her dream of becoming a doctor like her brother.

She would call him, unable to actually leave Jordan to join the rest of her family, thinking she had no hope, that it was all over.

In the last year there have been several instances of hate speech and targeted verbal attacks against different minority groups on the University of Michigan campus. However, the line between hate speech and free speech remains blurred for the University to interpret in each individual case, as the balance between maintaining free speech and a safe environment for students continually remains a precarious one.

Incoming University of Michigan Regent Ron Weiser (R) announced his campaign for chairman of the Michigan Republican Party Friday, according to the Detroit News. Weiser previously ran for the position in 2009 and 2010.

Earlier this month, the Michigan House of Representatives introduced a bill to adjust the Michigan National Guard State Tuition Assistance Program. The bill, which was introduced by Rep. Bruce Rendon (R–Lake City) would allow any current member of the National Guard to apply for tuition assistance while attending a university or college in Michigan.

The University of Michigan’s Giving Blueday, a 24-hour fundraising event for student organizations, raised over $5.5 million Tuesday from about 7,000 donors. This is the largest amount the program has raised to date, surpassing last year’s donations by nearly $1.5 million.
