Shortstop Jack Blomgren helped the Wolverines to a win over Toledo.

Wednesday’s matchup against Toledo was supposed to be a tune-up for the Michigan baseball team as they head into a big weekend series against Minnesota. That’s exactly what it was.

Behind strong a defensive performance and consistently solid pitching out of the bullpen, the Wolverines rolled past the Rockets to a comfortable 8-2 victory.

The Michigan baseball team heads into Big Ten play having found consistency on offense, embodied by its 16-2 victory over Michigan State on Saturday.

Last year, the Michigan baseball team lived and died by its offense.

In the first 15 games of the season, a stretch over which the Wolverines went 4-11, the offense averaged just 4.5 runs per game; in eight of those games, Michigan scored three runs or fewer. Over the next 20 games — in which the Wolverines went undefeated — they almost doubled that, averaging 8.4 runs per game and scoring 168 runs total over that stretch.

The Michigan baseball team has been unable to limit big-run innings in recent losses.

The Wolverines have been allowing big innings in crucial matchups. Their usual lights-out pitching has shown flaws, and as they face increasingly tough competition, those flaws are being exploited, causing significant problems for Team 153.

The Michigan baseball team went 1-3 in Texas last weekend.

Against some of their toughest competition of the season so far, the 23rd-ranked Wolverines could not find a rhythm, as the Red Raiders took all three games of the series. Though a 16-6 win over Stetson on Saturday night was a bright spot on the weekend, Texas Tech overpowered the Wolverines across the board in every contest this weekend.

Senior third baseman Jimmy Kerr's two home runs were one of a few bright spots in the Michigan baseball team's inconsistent trip out west.

The California trip now behind them, there are just as many question marks swirling around the Wolverines. They defeated Northridge handily in the first three games of the series, but dropped the fourth, suffering their first loss of the season. Michigan defeated No. 2 UCLA, which Bakich called “maybe one of the best teams in the country,” but ended the trip on a two-game losing streak, falling to Southern California and Oklahoma State.

Monday, March 4, 2019 - 4:14pm
Senior infielder Ako Thomas homered in the first at-bat of Michigan's series against Cal State-Northridge.

That changed on Friday when Thomas knocked one out of the park in the first at-bat of the seventeenth-ranked Wolverines’ three-game series against California State University-Northridge. Michigan won two out of the three games, beating the Matadors 2-0 on Friday and 4-2 in the first contest of a doubleheader on Sunday, but suffered their first loss of the season in the second game, falling to Northridge 5-2.

Senior infielder Blake Nelson committed five errors in two games against Binghamton, resulting in a benching.

Erik Bakich wants his team to play aggressively on defense, even if mistakes happen as a result.
