Senior center Jon Teske scored 19 points against Gonzaga on Friday.

Three days and three quality wins later, the Wolverines are proving that they have a lot more potential than anyone was giving them credit for. They defeated No. 8 Gonzaga, 82-64, on Friday in the championship of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas, their second win over a top-10 team in as many days, as their defense stifled the Bulldogs’ imposing transition offense.

George Pomey was an instrumental part of the 1964 men's basketball team, which went to the first NCAA Final Four in school history.

Sitting next to his wife in the second row from the top in section 122 of Crisler Center, white hair shining under the lights, he looks like any one of a dozen or more men his age at a basketball game on a Friday night.

New coach, new system.

There was always going to be a bit of a learning curve, and an injury to freshman guard Franz Wagner, heralded as one of the most exciting players coming to Ann Arbor this year, wasn’t going to help things.

There were signs of that in the highs and lows exposed in the offense in last week’s season-opening victory over Appalachian State, a game the Wolverines led by 30 but only won by eight.

New Michigan coach Juwan Howard notched his first win against Appalachian State on Tuesday.

As the final minutes of the Michigan men’s basketball team’s season-opening 79-71 victory over Appalachian State ran off the clock on Tuesday, Juwan Howard was in his element. His imposing frame cast a long reflection over the shining hardwood floors at Crisler Center, his long arms stretched as he signaled to his players, his face was animated as he shouted directions over the chaos of the Maize Rage behind him. Just a couple hours earlier, the newly-minted head coach’s body language told a much-different story. He wavered between sitting and standing for much of the beginning of the game – his first at the helm of this Michigan team. Sitting, he craned as far forward as he seemed physically capable of doing, trying to get a read on the court. Standing, he looked tense. His long arms either hung by his sides or fidgeted with his tie or the button of his jacket, but his body leaned forward as if he was physically restraining himself from running onto the court.

2018-19 Big Ten Player of the Year Cassius Winston returns for Michigan State.

Every year for the Tipoff edition, The Daily’s basketball beat puts out a preview of the entire conference. Plenty of other outlets do similar pieces around the start of the season. They’re long, they’re unwieldy, and, honestly, they can get a little boring.

Not this one.

If I’m going to write this Big Ten preview, then I’m going to have some fun with it. And I’m not going to waste your time.

Let’s just talk basketball.

Juwan Howard is faced with the task of replacing John Beilein.

Juwan Howard’s message at Big Ten media day was clear: Beilein was great. But he’s going to be his own man. That’s how he’s bringing Michigan into the Howard era.
