Sophomore designated hitter Jordan Nwogu kicked off the Wolverines' offense with a home run on Saturday.

The last time the Michigan baseball team was on the west coast, they left with more questions than answers. The Wolverines’ offense was quiet as they took their first loss of the season at California State University-Northridge on Mar. 3, and it struggled to find a rhythm for the remainder of the trip, suffering defeats at the hands of Long Beach State, USC and Oklahoma State. A victory over No. 1 UCLA was one of few bright spots on the week-long California swing.

Sophomore catcher Joe Donovan recorded two hits in the sixth inning Sunday.

The Wolverines got off to a quick start Sunday en route to a 13-1 win against Maryland, completing a three-game sweep.

Junior outfielder Jordan Brewer hit a home run in Michigan's win against Maryland.

COLLEGE PARK – The Michigan baseball team (33-11) beat Maryland, 10-4, Saturday to clinch another weekend win in their three-game road series in College Park. Every member of the Wolverines’ lineup reached base at least once in a comfortable victory over the Terrapins.

“We were just able to hit the ball well, we battled with two strikes, we played good defense, and we had a quality start from Tommy (Henry), and we ran the bases well,” Michigan coach Erik Bakich said. “It was just a very complete effort.”

Sophomore outfielder Jesse Franklin led Michigan over Maryland.

COLLEGE PARK – The Michigan baseball team beat Maryland, 10-7, in the first contest of a three-game road series on Friday behind strong hitting throughout its lineup.

Sunday, April 21, 2019 - 8:19pm
Sophomore infielder Jack Blomgren scored on a Northwestern throwing error on Saturday.

The Wolverines put runners on base with walks and hit-by-pitches, advanced those runners on wild pitches and stolen bases and kept them alive on fielders’ choices and errors. In a weekend series that was closer than anticipated at times, much of the Wolverines’ success came when they were able to capitalize on their opponents’ mistakes.

Thursday, April 18, 2019 - 7:23pm
Sophomore right-hander Jeff Criswell has transitioned from a bullpen role to become Michigan's third starter.

As the Wolverines head into the final stretch of their season, having Criswell dominate like this in that Sunday-starter role is more important than ever. The Big Ten race is tightening up, with Nebraska, Indiana and Iowa all looking like strong contenders.

But if Criswell can keep up this improvement — and Bakich and Fetter have both expressed every confidence that he can — the Wolverines have the potential to be serious competitors for the conference title too, and maybe even a postseason run.

Few anticipated what followed. Michigan dropped the first two games of the series, 10-5 and 10-4, with shaky performances from usually-dominant Nos. 1 and 2 starters, junior left-hander Tommy Henry and junior right-hander Karl Kauffman. The Wolverines avoided a sweep in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, beating the Buckeyes, 6-2.

Wednesday, April 10, 2019 - 9:33pm
Catcher Harrison Salter made the most of his start for Michigan.

Salter ended up making the most of the opportunity for the Wolverines. He notched a single and two RBI on a sacrifice fly and a sacrifice bunt as well as a solid performance behind the plate in No. 24 Michigan’s 6-4 victory over the Sycamores.

At the halfway point of its season, the No. 24 Michigan baseball team (22-8) is heating up at exactly the right time.

It’s returned to the rankings. It took four of its first five Big Ten games and eight of its last 10 contests, a stretch that included a 1-0 pitchers’ duel victory against San Jose State, a 16-2 rout of Michigan State and a gritty come-from-behind series win over Minnesota last weekend.

Sunday, April 7, 2019 - 7:05pm
Sophomore center fielder Jesse Franklin sparked Michigan's offense with a home run Sunday.

Clutch performances up and down the lineup made the difference in the Wolverines’ victories Saturday and Sunday over one of their toughest Big Ten competitors. In Saturday’s 5-3 win over the Golden Gophers, senior second baseman Ako Thomas made the difference, launching a two-out double to score the winning two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
