For a town that is known for being a progressive bubble, Ann Arbor sure is keeping it traditional with these pick up lines. There’s nothing quite like a good, old-fashioned “hi” to really woo ye fair lady.

On the other hand, maybe we’re just taking hints from our modern cultural icons? “Hello, it’s me,” really seemed to get the job done for Adele. If that opening line to her smash hit wasn’t alluring enough to get someone to go home with her, at least that “hello” helped Adele pick up a Grammy for Album of the Year.

Or maybe it was the true talent of our generation: The Chainsmokers (featuring Halsy). ”Hey, I was doin’ just fine before I met you” is a tad condescending, but people are into the chase these days, right? Their song “Closer” infiltrated tailgates, bars and house parties alike in Ann Arbor this year, it’s no wonder their lyrics have influenced the dating scene (also known as “hook-up culture”) of 2017.

If “hi,” “hello” and other variations are really the most successful pick up lines of the year, then Fetty Wap was really onto something in back in 2015.  We should’ve paid closer attention to “Trap Queen” and realized he was winking at us to follow along with his iconic lyrics “I’m like hey, what’s up, hello.”
