Wolverines win conference opener on Zadorsky's first-career goal

BLOOMINGTON —The Michigan women’s soccer team has lost its conference opener for six years running. But after a fantastic performance from junior goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer and a goal from an unexpected source, the Wolverines reversed a streak that began in 2005.

Michigan (6-2-1) traveled to Bloomington to face Indiana in its Big Ten opener.

Sophomore defender Shelina Zadorksy scored off the crossbar, making her the ninth Wolverine to score a goal this season.

"It couldn't have been better," Zadorksy said. “I saw the space I had and nobody was on me. I took two touches, noticed the goalie was off her line and went for it.”

The goal — lobbed from 25 yards out — was the first of Zadorsky’s career.

Early in the first half, sophomore midfielder Shelby Murphy had a chance on goal after a cross from sophomore forward Nkem Ezurike. But Murphy was called offsides.

Freshman midfielder Christina Murillo dribbled the ball through an entire onslaught of Indiana defenders, but her shot was blocked on a jumping save by the Hoosiers' goalkeeper.

Kopmeyer made seven saves in the game and defended nine corner kicks in the second half, leading the Wolverines to a win over Indiana.

"Right after we scored, they had four corner kicks in a row,” Kopmeyer said. “We gave them a lot of really good opportunities to score."

Michigan put 11 shots on goal — one short of Indiana’s total. Still, the Hoosiers came up scoreless, and the Wolverines returned home with a 1-0 win.

The Wolverines will play several conference games next, but this time with the type of momentum they haven't had in quite some time.

"These Big Ten games are always so tight,” Michigan coach Greg Ryan said. “They're usually a one-goal win, one-goal loss or tie. To come down to Indiana and win on their home field really gives us some confidence going forward."

The Wolverines will try and ride their momentum into their second conference game this Friday, where they will return home to face Minnesota.
