Even though No. 11 Evan King is slated to earn All-American honors for a third-straight year, there is still more the Michigan senior covets: a national championship.

King has been playing some of the best tennis of his career the last two days at the NCAA Singles Championships. After dismantling Georgia’s Nathan Pasha, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, King beat Cameron Silverman of Elon by the same score to advance to the Sweet 16.

It is King’s second time advancing to the Round of 16, after he did so in his sophomore year.

“I’ve been serving really well, which is making my life a lot easier,” King said. “I’m getting a lot of free points on my serve and that makes me a lot more loose on my return game because I can trust my service games.”

Michigan’s wily veteran has only been on the court for a total of two hours and 26 minutes through two matches. Which wouldn’t be surprising if it were for a single match.

King got off to a quick start Thursday, breaking Silverman in the first game of the match, and never looked back on his way to winning the first set.

Silverman made a push in the second set, breaking King twice early, but the Michigan senior broke him back twice, winning the match in two sets.

“I was making errors and double-faulted to end one of my games, which bugged me,” King said. “I didn't panic or anything and knew that if I went after my shots, I would have chances. I just tried to move on to the best of my ability.”

With the win, King is slated to play No. 30 Andre Dome of Cal Poly. Dome is coming off an upset win over the tournament’s fourth-ranked Anthony Rossi of Kentucky. Dome was recently named the Big West Player of the Year and did not drop a set in conference play.

“He’s a very good player, and hits very big,” King said. “(Cal Poly) doesn’t play the toughest schedule because of the size of the conference. He’s definitely one of the Top-15 players in the country even though he is ranked in the thirties. Everyone in the tournament knows who he is and respects him.”

King is currently on a 14-match win streak and has won 28 of his last 29 matches dating back to January 3rd.

“I have to keep doing what I’ve been doing,” he said. “I have to serve well, and when I’m given an opportunity I have to take it or else he will. I have to try to dictate the points and be on my A-game.”
