The Michigan men’s basketball team will be without its lone pre-season All-American on Thursday for a season-opening exhibition against Northern Michigan, as coach John Beilein announced Wednesday that sophomore point guard Trey Burke is suspended for a violation of team standards.

Beilein announced in a statement that Burke made some “out-of-character” decisions, and that he is confident that Burke will grow from the experience.
“Trey’s a good kid,” Beilein said. “We talked about it and he’s going to sit out this game and he’s going to learn a very valuable experience.”
Burke, Michigan’s floor leader, averaged 14.8 points and 4.6 assists in his rookie season. Taking his place in the starting lineup is freshman point guard Spike Albrecht, who is untested but has been recently praised by the team’s veterans for his play in practice.
Also sitting out tomorrow is redshirt sophomore forward Jon Horford, who is still recovering from a knee strain he suffered in practice last week.
