With less than 30 seconds left in his match, one of the heroes of the Michigan wrestling team’s 23-13 win over Northwestern sprang into action. Trailing 3-2, the wrestler earned four points for a takedown and a near fall to propel the Wolverines in their first Big Ten dual-meet victory of the season, sending the Cliff Keen Arena crowd to its feet.

Eric Grajales has been knocking on the door for two years. With consecutive top-three finishes in the Big Ten Championships and in the round of 12 in the NCAA Championships — just a round away from the hallowed status of All-American — Grajales has been on the doorstep of being a champion for his entire wrestling career for the Wolverines.

The dejected faces that lined the Michigan sideline said it all. A Friday night that started with an excited sellout crowd packing Cliff Keen Arena ended before all the wrestling even finished, as the 18th-ranked Wolverine wrestling team (0-3 Big Ten, 6-4 overall) was blown out by No. 4 Iowa, 33-10.

After the No. 11 Michigan wrestling team completed its first two Big Ten dual meets of the season in one weekend, the team could only wish that close counted in more than just horseshoes and hand grenades.

Having completed its non-conference portion of the season, a stretch littered with dual-meet victories and tournament disappointments, the true test for a young Michigan wrestling team lies ahead. For the next four weeks, the Wolverines will have Big Ten meets every Friday and Sunday — a daunting task when the competition and travel are considered.

With the hours left in 2012, the Michigan wrestling team had a chance to set some early resolutions. Although the 12th-ranked Wolverines were disappointed with their eighth-place finish at the Midlands Championships in Evanston, the tournament provided the team with valuable experience against top competition heading into the Big Ten portion of the schedule.
