Both teams finished with the same overall and conference record this season – Michigan (9-7 Big Ten, 21-10 overall) and Villanova (9-7 Big East, 21-10). In addition, both teams started 4-0 in conference play and suffered losses in the quarterfinals of their respective conference tournaments.

If Michigan avoids a first-round loss, it will likely face one of the premier teams in the country in Stanford. The Cardinal is the top seed in the region, and, barring a loss to Tulsa, will face Michigan in the second round on its home court.

Less than three minutes into the ESPN telecast, Michigan (9-7 Big Ten, 21-10 overall) learned its fate and was awarded an eight seed in the Spokane Region, tying a record for the highest seed in program history. The Wolverines will face ninth-seeded Villanova (9-7 Big East, 21-10 overall) on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. EDT in Palo Alto, Calif.

The Wolverines (10-6 Big Ten, 21-10 overall) will likely receive their sixth tournament berth in program history Monday under the leadership of first-year coach Kim Barnes Arico. At St. John’s University, Barnes Arico led the Red Storm to four tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2012.

Making its fourth consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament, Michigan (9-7 Big Ten, 21-10 overall) hoped to advance to its first semifinals since 2001, but the play of junior guard Klarissa Bell and 14-0 second half scoring run was too much for the Wolverines to overcome.
