The midday Palo Alto, Calif. sun beat down on the weary faces of the No. 12 Michigan women’s water polo team. A weekend that was supposed to be half vacation, half homecoming had soured into regrets of missed opportunities.

A whistle blew and a mad dash ensued toward the middle of the pool. The first swimmer to reach the ball tipped it to a teammate, and within seconds a goal was scored. Moments later another followed, putting the Michigan water polo team up 2-0 over Colorado State.

As the Michigan water polo team formed up frantically while the final seconds of the fourth quarter hemorrhaged into oblivion, I experienced déjà vu. I felt like I was watching Super Bowl XLII when Tom Brady heaved his final Hail Mary to Randy Moss.
