The last time it played in Crisler Arena, as opposed to its usual home, Cliff Keen Arena, the Michigan volleyball team did not fare well. Two years ago, the sixth-ranked Wolverines lost to unranked Oregon State in straight sets. The loss snapped their 12-match and 27-set winning streaks.

Redshirt junior Claire McElheny has been growing as an essential part of the Michigan volleyball team's offense. McElheny recorded 16 kills during the Wolverines' 3-2 win on Friday over Northwestern and nine kills in Saturday's 3-1 loss against No. 7 Illinois.

In the fourth set of Saturday’s match against Illinois, the Michigan volleyball team was were down 16-10. A cross-court kill, courtesy of sophomore middle blocker Jen Cross, put senior outside hitter Alex Hunt on the end line. Hunt cracked the ball like the end of a bullwhip. It wasn’t until two seconds after she buried the ball into the Fighting Illini’s side of the hardwood that the crowd reached its riotous capacity.

Before the Michigan volleyball team stepped on the court against Minnesota in Minneapolis, it was clear that the Wolverines were underdogs. The Gophers had a better Big Ten record, had history on their side, and Michigan was coming off of a 3-1 upset, courtesy of Wisconsin.
