The optimism in junior captains Lyndsay Miller and Katie Bruzdzinki's voices can't mask the cold-hard facts: After a 13-0 start to the season, the Michigan volleyball team has dropped four straight games.
Following a heart-breaking loss to Minnesota on Friday night, the Wolverines were swept by No. 14 Wisconsin (30-24, 30-19, 30-16) on Saturday to continue their Big Ten woes.
The two losses over the weekend will likely push No. 24 Michigan out of the top 25 just three weeks after the Wolverines debuted at No. 22 in the CSTV/AVCA rankings.

Michigan volleyball coach Mark Rosen doesn't like the NCAA's substitution rules.
He doesn't think the rules are strict enough, allowing almost-unlimited substitution. He thinks the current regulations take away from players developing their all-around game and remove a strategic element of coaching.
But that doesn't mean he won't take advantage of the rules.
Rosen has made frequent substitutions to platoon freshman Megan Bower and junior Lyndsay Miller, playing Bower in the back row and Miller in the front row.
When they sub for each other, they have a special ritual.

The first loss is never easy, especially when the crowd knows you should beat the opponent.
After an undefeated non-conference season, No. 19 Michigan suffered its first two losses of the season, both long and gut-wrenching five-game defeats.
"It's a tough lesson to learn, losing, but you've got to do it sometime," junior captain Lyndsay Miller said.
The Big Ten opener against Indiana started well for the Wolverines. Rolling through game one with an attacking percentage of .344, the Wolverines were in control.

Players are usually threatened with punishments for missing practice or lacking hustle.
Sophomore Kerry Hance of the Michigan volleyball team was chastised for losing her shoe.
"It happened twice in one conditioning session (last spring)," Hance said. "The first time, I just put it back on and kept sprinting. The second time it happened, my coach screamed at me, 'Kerry, either tie your shoes tight or we are all going to run.' "

They played in Crisler Arena, normally "where the hoopers at, the post men, the high flyers and the three-point shooters at" according to cager Brent Petway's song "No.1."
But Saturday, Crisler hosted volleyball for the first time as Michigan swept Pacific (30-23, 30-23, 30-26) in the finale of the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge, its third consecutive sweep this weekend.
