LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Michigan-Northwestern softball.
It's the small diamond's version of Michigan-Ohio State football.
The Wolverines bested the Wildcats in the Big Ten Tournament Championship game last year.
The teams split their two-game set in the weekend of Big Ten regular-season play, which aided the Wildcats in taking the conference title away from the two-time defending regular-season champion Wolverines. Northwestern finished just one-half game behind Michigan the year before.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - On the final day of Michigan's nonconference season, the Michigan softball team was looking to go into Big Ten play on a high note.
But the Wolverines' performance at the Women4Women Softball Invitational this weekend left nothing for Michigan coach Carol Hutchins to sing about.
"I thought we were unaggressive (and) timid," Hutchins said. "We've got nobody stepping up, and we got what we deserved."

After reaching the 20-win plateau with just one loss, the Michigan softball team's season was shaping similarly to the 2005 National Championship season.
The 2005 Wolverines strung together 32 straight wins after dropping their season-opener. This year's squad had won 16 consecutive contests after losing five games into the season.
But at the Judi Garman Classic, the chance to go retro was lost, going a disappointing 3-2 for the tournament.
"It was a tough weekend for us but we needed that kind of competition," Michigan coach Carol Hutchins said. "We still have some work to do."

Jacksonville, Fla., is probably not high on most people's list of top Spring Break destinations.
Unless you're a member of the Michigan softball team.
Making the trip down south for the Jacksonville University Tournament, the Wolverines were not disappointed to be spending their Spring Break away from home. On the contrary, the Wolverines' unity made it one of the their best.

If you can't throw a no-hitter, you might as well do the next best thing.
On Sunday, pitcher Lorilyn Wilson did just that.
The senior threw her second complete-game one-hitter of the season to win the FAU Dunkin' Donuts Classic tournament championship over Maryland in Boca Raton, Fla.
"I thought it was her best performance of the season," Michigan coach Carol Hutchins said. "She threw good pitches and she had good game management."
The Salem, Ore., native also tied her season-best of 13 strikeouts in the 14th-ranked Wolverines' 2-1 victory over Maryland (3-2).

The Michigan softball team kept digging itself into holes last weekend.
Save a couple of routs against Texas-Arlington (combined score: 15-4), the 11th-ranked Wolverines' opponents scored first in each of the three other games at the season-opening Wilson DeMarini Invitational.

When the Michigan softball team won the 2005 Women's College World Series, it wasn't the end of an era.
Losing just two starters, the 2006 team was more of a continuation of the championship-winning squad than a new beginning.
But after losing four starting position players (catcher Becky Marx, second baseman Tiffany Haas, third baseman Grace Leutele and rightfielder Stephanie Bercaw) and ace pitcher Jennie Ritter, the 11th-ranked Wolverines team, who trail just No. 4 Northwestern among Big Ten teams, must carve out its own identity.
But it won't be easy.
