Everett Cook: Hello, Mitch McGary

BY EVERETT COOK

In Michigan’s 78-53 win over VCU on Saturday, the Wolverines needed the man who has been backing up junior forward Jordan Morgan most of the year. They needed their behemoth, their human lightning rod, the man known more for his energy and crowd-pleasing antics than his actual play. They needed freshman forward Mitch McGary.

Wolverines’ transition offense, Albrecht play big roles against Havoc defense

BY COLLEEN THOMAS

All Michigan had to do to get around the Rams’ pressure was outrun them. Ideally, sophomore point guard Trey Burke brought the ball up the court — he would simply outrun his defender — but if VCU would trap Burke, a quick pass to junior guard Tim Hardaway Jr. or freshman guard Nik Stauskas would allow the Wolverines to set up their offense.

Wolverines throttle VCU to advance to first Sweet Sixteen since 1994

BY DANIEL WASSERMAN

Saturday afternoon, in a maize-and-blue-packed Palace of Auburn Hills, it was the Wolverines who sent a statement heard loud and clear: they are for real. Michigan flexed its muscles early and often, blowing out the Rams, 78-53, to earn the program’s first Sweet Sixteen trip since 1994.

Without Burke, a confident Hardaway emerges as leader on offense

BY COLLEEN THOMAS

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Eventually, it was obvious. Sophomore guard Trey Burke just wasn’t going to have his typical offensive game Thursday against South Dakota State. Without a little help from someone else, the Michigan men’s basketball team was destined for another first-round upset and a short trip home from the Palace of Auburn Hills.

BY DANIEL WASSERMAN

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Even with the Big Ten Player of the Year, sophomore Trey Burke, at its helm, the Michigan men’s basketball team was a rather popular pick to be upset by South Dakota State in its first NCAA Tournament game.

Burke looks to bounce back as Michigan advances to face VCU and 'Havoc' defense

BY EVERETT COOK

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — With 11 minutes left in the Michigan men’s basketball team’s 71-56 victory over South Dakota State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, it looked like the Wolverines were in trouble. Michigan’s star, its backbone and floor general, sophomore point guard Trey Burke, had fallen hard to the floor, landing sharply on the hardwood.

HOLDING COURT: Nik Stauskas’ growth into a sharpshooter

BY COLLEEN THOMAS

In the rear of a Mississauga, Ont. home, there’s no frozen pond for a young Canadian athlete to skate around, nor a pool for kids to enjoy in the summertime. Instead, a green and red, half-length basketball court sits in the yard waiting for someone to pick up a basketball and play.

Michigan basketball to have its hands full with South Dakota State’s Nate Wolters

BY STEVEN BRAID

Nate Wolters might not have a Sports Illustrated Player of the Year award under his belt or a selection to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-America first team, but the South Dakota State point guard is one of the few players good enough to inspire a catchy slogan: “Naters gonna Nate.”
