With characteristically porous defense, Wolverines swept away by Fighting Irish

BY MATT SLOVIN

SOUTH BEND — As they have all season, the goals against the Michigan hockey team came in droves Saturday night. And just like the entire year, the offense lacked the firepower to make up for the poor defense and goaltending that continue to plague the Wolverines. They lost 6-4 to close a weekend sweep during which they were outscored 13-8.

Rutledge finds success between the pipes

BY MICHAEL LAURILA

DETROIT — With the looming graduation of then-senior goalie Shawn Hunwick a year ago, Michigan coach Red Berenson knew he had to find a replacement netminder.

Jared Rutledge, who had started a full year between the pipes for the U.S. under-18 last season and posted an impressive 17-8-4 record, seemed to be the guy slotted to fill — or try to fill — the role of Hunwick.

DeBlois, special teams anchor hockey in weekend sweep

BY LIZ VUKELICH

Skating towards the goal on a breakaway, DeBlois closed his eyes, then sniped the puck over Michigan State goaltender Jake Hildebrand’s left shoulder — a shot so powerful that the water bottle attached to the goal was ejected out of its fastenings and fell to the ice.
