Back in January, Michigan coach Red Berenson started preaching the importance of playing “playoff hockey” to the Wolverines as a way to try and break them out of their slump. Before this weekend, there’ d been glimpses of this mindset but Michigan still had trouble putting one full game together, let alone two.

The sophomore duo — Guptill and forward Phil Di Giuseppe — combined for five goals and two assists over the weekend, helping Michigan to just its second sweep and fourth road win of the season.

Though three goals Saturday was still probably more than Michigan would have liked to give up, it found compensation from the forwards, who led the Wolverines to a 6-3 win over Ohio State and secured the team’s first road sweep of the season.

Michigan (8-15-2 CCHA, 11-18-2 overall) played some of its best defense of the year in a 5-3 win over Ohio State, thanks in part to a strong forecheck in the opposing zone, despite entering Friday’s contest last in the CCHA in goals allowed, with 3.63 per game.

The bad news is that the Wolverines have to travel to Columbus, a daunting task considering that they’ve yet to put together a good road series. The good news? At least the hostile environment will be a learning opportunity, effectively Michigan’s last chance to get some experience on the road under its belt before traveling for the CCHA Tournament.
