Highlighted by a four-goal second period, the Michigan hockey team outmuscled No. 9 Western Michigan, 5-1, to finish with its fourth-consecutive sweep. With the win, Michigan advances to Joe Louis Arena for its 24th-consecutive appearance in the CCHA semifinals.

Coming off its third consecutive series sweep, the Wolverines begin the next part of their run to salvage the season on the road. Michigan was swept by Western Michigan the last time they met, but this weekend the Wolverines return to Lawson with much more momentum.

Defense finally limiting goals allowed

Michigan is currently riding a six-game winning streak and has vastly improved on defense. The Wolverines have allowed one goal per game while scoring three and a half on average in the past two weeks. To say the defensive effort has been better wouldn’t be doing it justice — Michigan looks like a completely different team behind its blue line.
