On Monday night, as the warm sun set over Fort Meyers, FL, the Michigan baseball team (5-6) stepped onto the field for batting practice, looking to earn one more win before heading to California for their next round of tournament play.

Michigan (2-4 overall) will travel to Florida to play five games in the Snowbird Invitational before heading to California for the USD Tournament to finish the trip. In total, the team will play a total of nine games over a 10-day stretch.

Playing outside for one of the first times of the year, in a different time zone, with a new coaching staff, the Michigan baseball team didn’t start the season as they hoped. Despite all these facts, Michigan coach Erik Bakich refused to claim moral victories.

Michigan baseball’s pitching performance during its season-opening series against California was lackluster, and that’s putting it nicely. A multitude of starters and relievers gave up 28 hits and 11 runs in the first two games of the weekend.

The Michigan baseball team headed to Berkeley this weekend to take on the California Golden Bears in a three-game series, and the outcome was strangely reminiscent of the previous season – the Wolverines were swept, losing two games in extra innings and their final game in the bottom of the ninth.
