From the Daily: A semester away
BY THE MICHIGAN DAILY
Participation — that's what usually keeps good ideas from becoming great programs. Student groups, academic programs and movements frequently sprout up and fizzle out not long after, not for lack of ingenuity but for lack of widespread effort. Students shouldn't allow Semester in Detroit — a University program that will give students a chance to learn, live and work in the Motor City — to join the graveyard when it launches next semester.

With illegal immigration a hot topic this election year, all eyes are on Immigration and Customs Enforcement. As its policies become gradually less respectful of civil rights, activist groups and cities are taking a stand. Yet here in typically progressive Ann Arbor, the city council is standing by, doing next to nothing. With several major cities already leading the fight against the violation of immigrants’ civil rights, Ann Arbor has no excuse for its lack of action. It is time for Ann Arbor to follow the example of other progressive cities and take a stand against civil right infringement by becoming a sanctuary city.

Maybe the increased carbon dioxide in the air is throwing off people’s minds or maybe high energy costs have finally convinced people that conservation is important, but big green ideas are taking the United States by storm. But like all successful ideas, the bar is now set high — the University must exceed its current commitment in the future.

He didn't intend to give a speech, but candidate makes the most of the opportunity, seizing the moment to challenge his listeners in an impromptu speech to change the world with one big idea.
From the Daily: Drunken logic
BY THE MICHIGAN DAILY
Get this: College students drink. Some of them drink even though they aren’t legally allowed to drink. Unfortunately, others binge drink. It’s a problem. But it’s also something that has only been made worse by our country’s absurd requirement that you be 21 years old to buy alcohol — a policy that has driven excessive drinking underground. Now, after 24 years of this failed policy, a group of 129 college presidents and chancellors have gotten together to ask the federal government to reconsider. Not surprisingly, University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman is absent from that list. But she shouldn’t be.
