Like most students planning to graduate at the end of this term, LSA senior Hatim Elhady is working to finish up his last remaining requirements for his majors in economics and near eastern studies. But unlike most seniors, Elhady isn’t spending his extra time leading student groups, going to the bars or applying for jobs or graduate school. Instead, he’s running his campaign for City Council.

Students today know Division Street as the road that runs parallel to State Street, but not many realize its name used to mean something.
In 1903, the city of Ann Arbor literally divided the town by prohibiting the sale of alcohol in all establishments east of Division Street, and allowing it to the west, according to the Ann Arbor District Library’s website.

Ann Arbor City Council rebuffs state budget draft

The resolution sponsored by Councilmembers Margie Teall (D-Ward 4), Marcia Higgins (D-Ward 4) and Greden, expressed City Council’s dissent over the proposed state budget, which would “slash statutory revenue sharing to Michigan municipalities by 30 percent,” according to the resolution. That cut amounts to a loss of approximately $1,200,000 per year for the City of Ann Arbor, the resolution shows.
