Softball tramples Broncos with eight-run first inning

For the second time this week, the No. 12 Michigan softball team scored eight runs in the first inning in Tuesday’s victory over Western Michigan. While the Wolverines (9-0 Big Ten, 32-7 overall) were held scoreless in each of the next four innings, the early lead was enough for sophomore pitcher Haylie Wagner to earn an 8-0 win.

Last season, the then-No. 20 Michigan softball team stumbled into Columbus after an uncharacteristically slow start to the season. The Wolverines began Big Ten play hitting just .249 as a team. Meanwhile, Ohio State was riding an eight-game winning streak heading into the matchup.

Behind the plate Lauren Sweet is softball's brick wall

Behind the plate, Sweet’s responsibilities go beyond catching a ball and throwing it back to the pitcher. Sweet has been a brick wall for the Wolverines, committing just five errors in her role as starting catcher — just three all last season. She completed her freshman season with a Big Ten Freshman of the Week award and a .988 fielding percentage.
