Women's basketball banquet full of smiles, tears and goodbyes

The end-of-the-season banquet culminated the 2012-2013 season on Wednesday night in front of a crowd filled with families and season ticket holders. Despite an upcoming offseason where she will be losing a critical portion of her team, Michigan coach Kim Barnes Arico was all smiles as she helped celebrate her team’s accomplishments.

Going into the final rotation of the NCAA national championship on Saturday night, the Michigan men’s gymnastics team held a half-point lead over Oklahoma with only its floor routine to go. But while the Sooners and the other four teams were anxiously waiting to begin their last event rotations, the Wolverines couldn’t help but smile.

Jenny Ryan is a lot of things. She’s an LSA senior, a point guard, she was the captain of the 2012-2013 women’s basketball squad and she’s a third team All-Big Ten selection.
But above all else, Jenny Ryan is a Wolverine.
The Saginaw native will go down as one of the best women’s basketball players in program history, both on and off the court.
Wolverines win program’s 16th Big Ten Championship

Friday night was the team and all-around competition, in which the third-ranked Wolverines captured the Big Ten title. Michigan (7-1 Big Ten, 17-2 overall) edged out No. 1 Penn State, 438.900-434.050 in the team competition, while Minnesota grabbed third.

It has been a hell of a season for the Michigan women’s basketball team. The Wolverines exceeded all expectations under first-year coach Kim Barnes Arico. Michigan (9-7 Big Ten, 22-11 overall) got off to a 16-2 start — best in program history — during which time the Wolverines went on a 10-game winning streak, setting another program record.

In a 60-52 win over Villanova (9-7 Big East, 21-11 overall), it was clear Michigan came out erratic and excited, struggling to finish on several early shots in the paint by starting out the game shooting 4-for-14.

Less than three minutes into the ESPN telecast, Michigan (9-7 Big Ten, 21-10 overall) learned its fate and was awarded an eight seed in the Spokane Region, tying a record for the highest seed in program history. The Wolverines will face ninth-seeded Villanova (9-7 Big East, 21-10 overall) on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. EDT in Palo Alto, Calif.
