THE INSTITUTION: CSG passes summer budget

BY AMRUTHA SIVAKUMAR

On Wednesday evening, the Central Student Government kicked off the first meeting of the Summer Assembly like any other — by approving its budget for the coming semester.

This semester, the proposed budget allocated a total of $25,000 to be used during the spring and summer terms. The CSG commissions awarded funding to the Health Issues Commission, the LGBT Issues Commission, External Relations Commission and the Diversity Affairs Commission. Funding was also granted for a fall retreat for CSG executive members.

The summer budget primarily gave funds to organizations that would hold events during Welcome Week, including a proposed $3,200 to Gayz Craze — a day of events organized by the LGBT commission of CSG — and $2,500 to the Pre-Class Bash, a celebration preceding the first day of classes organized by the Residence Halls Association.

The Summer Assembly also approved $2,500 in initial funding for advertising a CSG-sponsored tailgate for the upcoming Under the Lights football game that will be held when the Wolverines play Notre Dame this season.

During the 2011 football game against Notre Dame, the CSG tailgate brought together over 8,000 students, according to a Regents Communication.

“My goal is not to spend any money on the actual tailgate and only spend on the advertising,” CSG President Michael Proppe said during the assembly. He hopes that the Athletic Department and Division of Student Affairs will cover all costs for the planning, organization and execution of the tailgate.

The budget was unanimously approved by the assembly and will be implemented throughout the semester. CSG will present its planned projects and propositions to the University Regents meeting tomorrow in Dearborn.

Student Assembly voices dissatisfaction with general admission policy

In a communication to the regents, Proppe voiced the assembly’s dissatisfaction with the new general admission policy for football tickets.

In the first meeting of the newly elected assembly, a resolution opposing the policy was passed 45-1, indicating the assembly's intention to work toward reversing it.

“As the voice of the student body, CSG would like to set a precedent of student input in major decisions,” the communication read. “We are willing and able to offer student input in major decisions this year and in years to come.”
