MSU is requiring freshmen to have health insurance or join its plan
Michigan State University students who don’t have health insurance will be automatically enrolled in an Aetna health plan by the end of the month, the Detroit Free Press reported yesterday. The plan will be added onto their tuition bills and will cost $940 a semester. MSU officials say their new policy is meant to protect students who are struggling to pay for health and education bills. However, many state Republicans have come out against MSU’s new requirement.
"It's a one-size-fits-all plan," Rep. Kevin Cotter (R-Mt. Pleasant) told the Detroit Free Press. "The university is saying, 'You are going to have this.' This is mandated coverage."

Did the New York Giants buy a whole team just to get their quarterback?
The Los Angeles Times wrote an interesting historical piece featuring Benny Friedman, a quarterback who played for the University in the mid 1920s, yesterday. The article discuses how former New York Giants owner Tim Mara purchased the entire Detroit Wolverines franchise for the sole purpose of adding Friedman to his roster. Mara was attracted to Friedman for his abilities on the field and for his Jewish religion, which Mara believed would draw New York’s Jewish population to Giants games.
