LIVE BLOG: Michigan hockey vs. Michigan State, Game 2
BY MICHAEL FLOREK
Due to technical difficulities I wasn't able to sign on until 5:37 left in the first period. Sorry about that but we are LIVE in East Lansing and Michigan State has just scored on a nice pass play from behind the net out in front as Llewellyn lost sight of his man, 1-0 Michigan State.
Other than that, and a post hit by the Spartans a minute earlier, nothing has really happened.
Quickly here's the lineups:
Michigan
12 Hagelin - 29 Caporusso - 10 Brown
25 Wohlberg - 19 Rust - 27 Czarnik
23 Glendening - 21 Treais - 11 Lynch
14 Lebler - 16 Winnett - 3 Vaughan
Defense
34 Llewellyn - 4 Summers
7 Langlais - 6 Burlon
13 Moffie - 5 Kampfer
Goalies
Hogan
Hunwick
2:22 Hagelin is in the box right now, and the penalty kill has the Spartans running around. I may be wrong, but this is the first penalty I've seen Hagelin take, usually he is doing the killing.
Thats the end of the first, it was a pretty even period but very different from last night as both teams only took one penalty.
The crowd is pretty racous out here. After Michigan State's goal the student section started throwing confetti in the air. They have been going nuts ever since.
Check out the basketball live blog during the intermission, its pretty decent. Michigan is already up by 22 so I wouldn't stay on it too long. I guarantee this game is closer than 20 points.
The Michigan State Zamboni has a leather recliner on the back of it for the little kid riding on the back. It is completely unnecessay but cool nonetheless. Unfortunately the student section isn't encouraging the kid to take his shoe off. By the way final shots from that period were 9-6 Michigan.
I was trying to watch figure skater Ashton Miller do her thing, but the Michigan State SID jumped in front of me and yelled that the attendence 7,099. I feel like I had to pass this on. By the way, Ashton Miller's performance was good not great.
Second Period
20:00 We are about to get started here in the second, Caporusso's line will take on MSU's Tropp - Sucharski - Grant line.
18:22 Summers just let a slapshot go off of a faceoff. It seemed like he didn't get all of it, but Michigan has been winning a majority of draws so far, Coach Berenson has to like that.
16:56 Michigan State just got a penalty for hitting after the whistle. This is a big moment for the PP Unit, if Michigan wants to break out of the streak they need to score with the extra man. They are ranked 43 out of 58 on the power play.
14:55 Another unsuccess power play, only two shots on it.
13:07 Langlais jumped into the play and made a move on the defensemen, but he was thrown a little off balance and crashed into Spartan goalie Drew Palmisano, there was a small skirmish, and the crowd started booing but there was no call.
11:00 Michigan State had to players open in front of Hogan and got shot shut down. Michigan came back down and hit the post and forced Palmisano to make to saves that got the crowd chanting "Palmisano."
8:41 Thw Wolverines are carrying the play so far this period, they have eight shots to State's four. It has mainly been due to navagating through the neutral zone. They are gaining the zone with speed, somehting they didn't do last night
5:00 Tropp just tried the same move he scored on last night, a toe-drag and then a quick shot to the top left. This time he shot it wide.
4:30 I just spotted a "We heart Tropp" sign. It's a little different from the sign at Yost last night that had numerous words about Tropp that I cannot rewrite in this blog.
3:12 Wohlberg was just pushed into Palmisano and after the whistle Spartan defensemen Torey Krug gave him a little cheap shot. No penalties called either way.
1:35 Now this game is beginning to look a little more like a Michigan vs. Michigan State game, there was a bit of skirmish after the whistle after Chris Brown started hacking at Palmisano. Even Hagelin got involved in the tussle.
End of Second Period That's the end of the period. Despite not scoring the Wolverines have like that effort. Shots after two periods: 24-11 Michigan.
Chuck-a-Puck They just had the Chuck-a-Puck contest, where everybody buys a puck to throw onto the ice, and the one closest to the center wins. Michigan State put a cone in the middle, which the student intern did not like at all. It is a little strange and I can see the intern's argument because the guy who won had his puck bounce and land on the base of the cone.
The Michigan State Band is playing Blink 182 right now, I almost stood up and applauded but I had to refrain. Now they are playing some crazy song I don't know of but the whole student section is dancing – If you want to call raising your hands in the air dancing.
Third Period
20:00 We're just getting ready to go for the final period, Caporusso's line will start.
18:38 Burlon just made a bad pass that was right on the stick of a Spartan player, he walked in two-on-one and fed it to Andrew Rowe on the back door who literally tapped it into the net. 2-0 Michigan State
17:12 A puck was deflected into the crowd and the guy made a nice one handed grab while hanging onto his drink. No word on whether the Mets are going to sign him long term.
15:05 Huge power play for the Wolverines right now. If they have any chance at coming back, they need to score right now.
13:05 No goals and only one shot for the Wolverine power play, but Michigan State just took another penalty. Michigan is 0-for-5 on the power play. You have to figure their due to score eventually right? Maybe not
12:36 So much for that power play. Chris Brown was trying to stay onsides and picked the State defensemen, two minutes for interference.
10:43 Michigan State almost put the game away on a quick shpot as Hogan was out of position. He was able to get a pad on it as he was falling backwards.
9:27 Another Spartan penalty, this time a bench minor for too many men. Michigan desperately needs a goal here.
8:01 Michigan State almost put it away again. The Wolverine defensemen got walked around and the puck slid across the crease parrallel to the goal line, but now Spartan player was able to tap it in.
5:58 Hogan just saved the game as he stopped a breakaway that came off of a faceoff on the Spartan side of the ice. This period is the complete opposite of the second, Michigan only has four shots.
4:12 Michigan is just deflated right now, senior Steve Kampfer took a penalty and unless this thing changes quickly the game is over.
End of Game This one is over 2-0 Michigan State. Check the Daily Monday for more coverage, I'm sure Berenson will have some interesting things to say about this game.
