i think what smilovitz meant about "self- hating jews" ( although he's encouraged to clarify or disagree) is jews ( like leiberman and cantor...and a growing number of knee-jerk jewish obama "hatas" )who have thrown their lot in with the christian fundamentalists who control the republican party.

while it's true that the latter often support israel strongly its often for insulting/crazy reasons: i.e that a powerful israel is a necessary precondition for the apocalypse in which all will die except true believers, and jews will them come to christ... ( see the "book of revelation")

of course the "relapolitik" in israel and among any thoughtful people is more nuanced and complicated...neither sharon nor netanyahu can remotely be called "self-hating jews". yet they forged strong alliances with christian fundamentalists for the understandable, but sad, reason that a whole bunch of folks around the world who should know better , including badly misguided liberal jews ( of whom i am one in most cases, liberal that is- not misguided) seem to be turning their backs on israel.

and in existential survival situations like israel's ( and jews generally), faced with implacable enemies like the jihadi tide that's sweeping the islamic world ( and exemplified outside of islam by the "so far left they are right"idiots here in town who picket synagogues and get themselves banned from MSA meetings) you must take your allies where you find them, even if you dont ( and shouldn't ) fully trust them. or at least that's not a crazy stance to take...ala lieberman/cantor.

all that said, i personally still like obama alot. id be curious to see, if smilovitz can takes off his "cute maureen dowd in training hat" for a second and tell us if im on the right track re his real intentions in his piece. ( in any case i am absolutely on the right track in terms of reality)

Great article! You could cut a few of the jokes and have a more serious, focused piece that is still very funny, I think. But definitely a fun and interesting read!

The Obama era hasn't been ended by spin. The Obama era IS spin.

Remember the U.S.S. Liberty, June 8, 1967, the State of Israel mounted a false flag attack on an unarmed American reconnaissance ship in international waters. This occurred during the infamous Six Days War in which Israel mounted a pre-emptive strike against Egypt using American Intelligence and resources.

The captain of the vessel is the only person in U.S. history to have received the Congressional Medal of Honor in secret. The surviving sailors have received numerous threats against their livelihood not to reveal their story, but all that is meaningless after narrowly escaping your own murder at the hand of the Israeli Defense Forces.

The BBC produced a full documentary which has never aired on American television networks, that can also be found below.

Call your U.S. Congressman, demand a public apology from the Israeli government now!

anonymous ( aka blaine coleman or possibly synagogue picketer henry herskovitz ) triggered the MSA change in speakers rules to limit endless antisemitic babble; caused a city council candidate to lose because the candidate waited too long to repudiate his/their unwanted and destructive support...and that's only in the past week.....

he's so reviled and rejected by so many, including former allies, that he now seems reduced to posting on threads that have absolutely nothing to do with his anti jewish self loathing monomania...in this case about a 1/2 century old incident, still shrouded in uncertainty, that the aggrieved party itself long ago forgave and forgot.

good anonymous, no relation to the previous poster

Smart, witty, and obviously well-researched.

Fun Fact: Mr. Smilovitz has a fundamental misunderstanding of satire.

What an idiot. Did you even bother to read the news? In the only federal elections that occurred this year, the Democrats gained 2 seats. If you want to be a conservative tool, fine. At least have some idea what you're talking about.

This is actually some of the best writing I have seen in the Mich Daily for a long while. The message reminds me of the famous statement by HL Mencken: 'Nobody every went broke underestimating the bad taste of the American public.' Or words to that effect.

This is one of the worst written pieces to have surfaced in the past decade. It isnt good commentary, isnt good reportage, isnt good parody.

Pundits on the right don't see some eerie connection between Obama and Mao; rather, they quote and show clips of an Obama communications director describing her two sources of inspiration: Mao and Mother Theresa.

Eric Cantor is pro-growth, pro-life, believes cap and tax would kiill his state's coal industry and hurt its manufacturing, asserts that the left's health care 'reform' will trash the delivery of health care in America and bankrupt its treasury. How you get from these positions to self hating Jew is not at all clear.

One thing is clear: the time spent reading your commentary would have been better spent taking out the trash.

Actually, Cantor and Leiberman are self-hating Jews because they proudly stand with those call Obama a Nazi merely for looking to expand healthcare. Cantor stood in front of a giant photo of dead Jews in a concentration camp (the teabaggers representation of Obama healthcare plan) and proclaimed his unity with these people. When you cast your lot with those who hate you, you are a self-hating person. As a Jew, I would have walked down from the podium and ripped the sign from the nutty hands of those wackjobs. Would it cost him votes? Maybe. But it would gain him respect.

Side note...as an alum, it's fun to check out the Daily online from time to time.

As a Jew myself, I agree that the poster was inappropriate. However, since you prefer to call Republicans 'teabaggers', perhaps the fudge packers and muff divers and others on left ought to be called out for their misrepresentations of health care reform.

The stresses on our economy that spending $1.3 trillion -- and probably a whole lot more -- that we don't have may cripple the nation as we know it. Already, various economic policies of the Obama administration are whacking the purchasing power of our currency.

Had America been as weak years ago as the reckless spending might make us, there might not have been an ability to stand up to the Axis powers in WWII. Or perhaps you dont grasp that?

Because Eric Cantor is a Jew. Who's not a Democrat (ZOMGsomebodycallDailyKos). Apparently, membership in the democratic party is now required in order to practice Judaism. And Joe Lieberman had the temerity to go against his liberal friends on Iraq, hence he must also hate, nay loathe, his Jewish heritage. In other words, Zach Smilovitz is a fascist (you're a fascist because you think everyone should have the same opinions as you do) dipshit. Now go take a class on the meaning of the word "satire", because this wasnt it. If I wanted a partisan hackjob to wipe my ass with, I would have been reading the Nation or NYT.

re: "micha's".....ive always noticed that people who add "lol" to their own posts aren't usually all that witty ( or in this case even comprehensible)
