TONIGHT!!

The Michigan Student Assembly and Student Legal Services will be co-hosting an informational session about signing leases in the MSA Chambers at 7pm. The Chambers are on the 3rd floor of the Michigan Union. Attorney Gayle Rosen will be there along with other attorneys from SLS.

There will be pizza. If you're thinking about signing a lease, bring your lease for the attorneys to look over.

Why do you think most slum...err…”land”lords oppose construction of new apartment complexes such as Zaragon Place and 4 Eleven Lofts? They feel threatened. These apartments are brand new and come with much more amenities than typical rentals that most students end up settling for. Sure, they cost more, but I think a lot of people are willing to pay higher rent for better living conditions and amenities. New apartments make these older and improperly maintained rental units less desirable therefore can eventually drive the price down to a more appropriate level for their conditions. It forces “land”lords to either lower the rent or renovate these units that are so bad they probably wouldn’t even pass inspection to qualify as housing for Section 8 government vouchers.

High rent for sub-standard rental housing...the concept of of supply and demand works in favor for landlords in Ann Arbor. The demand for rental units is high enough for landlords to get away with charging a lot for very little. I don't miss this since graduating and moving to Chicago 2 years ago.

A lot of my friends think rent in Chicago is high, but making the comparison between my 1BR in Ann Arbor and my 1BR in Chicago I shrug my shoulders and reply "I get a lot more for my money than I did in Ann Arbor." Only $300 more to rent a 3 year old condo in the south loop that is nearly twice the size with much more amenities (24hr doorman, heated garage parking, fitness center, in-unit washer/dryer, all utilities included, etc.) and a stunning view of Lake Michigan and Soldier Field. Also I don't have to pay extra for having a pet. Rent was $25/month extra in Ann Arbor for having a pet. I think getting through the experience of renting in Ann Arbor makes me feel I'm no longer getting ripped off and appreciate the value of better living conditions.

My advice to students is to graduate as soon as possible, get a good job, and enjoy real housing.
