The broke college student's ticket to feigning sophistication in Ann Arbor's martini bars: no one they have their drink specials. Here's a guide:
Café Felix
Home to the most extensive martini menu on Main Street, Café Felix is the place to go to sample sophistication. And luckily, Felix’s Half-Off Martini Monday makes it that much more feasible. Usually, a generous 9.5-ounce, premium liquor martini costs $10. But on Monday after 8 p.m., around 20 of the 30 concoctions are just $5 — providing the prime opportunity to pretend that you drink Bombay Sapphire all the time.
The Earle
To really feel swanky for an evening, you should definitely hit up The Earle’s happy hour from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you can get there before 6:30, get the oyster plate for just $2.75 with another purchase. But the best night to go for cocktails is Thursday Martini Night. While cocktails are discounted during happy hour all week, the savings are nominal. On Thursday, select cocktails are $6. Which would go better with oysters — tould the Pomegranate Martini or the Sapphire Gimlet go better with oysters? At these prices, you can afford to find out.
The Black Pearl
Coming up on its first anniversary, The Black Pearl has worked to find its place among Main Street’s other nighttime hot spots. One way it has done that is with a discounted late-night menu offered from 11 p.m. to close on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The menu features nine of the Pearl’s 18 martinis, ranging in price from $5 to $7. While the cucumber-infused Garden Martini — the pearl of the Pearl — isn’t offered on special, the Lychee Martini is an enticing substitute. Beware of the dessert and Hypnotiqic-based drinks
Bab’s Underground Lounge
Bab’s is the kind of place where a “good deal” means a forty of Miller High Life for $4 or a scotch-stogie combo for $12. But to the typical college student, forties shouldn’t cost more than $2 and cigars are a joke. On Pitcher Perfect Wednesday, though, the basement haunt does offer an alluring special: pitchers of cocktails for $12. You can definitely find a cheaper pitcher at another bar, but six varieties of cocktails are worth a trip. Round up three or four friends and go in for a Sloe Comfortable Screw.
