How long before someone comes along and smashes the solar panels on those things? This is completely impractical.

"Go to the old school completely mechanical meters. Cheap, recyclable, and no power needed!!"

Exactly. Considering all of the exotic and toxic materials in the electronics, solar panels, etc., the claims of "eco-friendly" and "green" don't pass the sniff test of people who truly understand environmental issue.

Want to make parking more convenient? Get rid of the "Resident Permit Only" areas and stripe the streets to designate parking spaces. I've seen hundreds of cases where one car is taking up two parking spaces simply because the driver was too lazy or selfish to park in a manner that would allow another car space enough to park. Do like other cities do: stripe the parking spaces and enforce an ordinate requiring cars to park within the boundaries of those spaces. And hey, think of the money the city could collect from writing tickets to all the morons who don't know how to parallel park!

I concur. Not only is this a poor choice of parking meter, the poster's point about enforcement is well made. Ann Arbor is rife with old, unkempt markings and streets without proper parking. If the city concentrated on simpler schemes rather than this "city of the future" junk, it would be far more effective for far less cost to the taxpayer.

Hooray! This means we're a little bit closer to getting those hoverboards we wanted at Christmas!

Eco friendly? I see lots of plastic and other crap but whatever, this is silly. Want eco friendly? Go to the old school completely mechanical meters. Cheap, recyclable, and no power needed!!

Unfortunately in this case Eco-friendly also means butt-ugly. Look at that size of that thing! It looks like a small alien ship has landed. Unfortunately to be able to "Go Green" we all must have to also go obtrusive! Bleh!

Whether or not these are "eco friendly" remains to be seen but - we can rest assured - these will be revenue friendly...to the City of Ann Arbor.
