This is an excellent call on the University's part.

There is no question smoking is deleterious to health.

Persons who wish to smoke have no right to pollute the air of those who do not wish to breath in that smoke second-hand.

I very much appreciated the logic of a previous poster regarding the financial incentive the University has to prepare its students to become future alumni as healthy and wealthy as possible. Good stuff.

"University needs to respect freedom of choice and avoid making its students and employees do what it feels is the morally correct course of action."

Like their view on homosexuals, birth control,or prevent prosecution of clergy for sex crimes against minors?

Wow! You know who your talking about? Respect freedom?

I'm glad I'm out of college.

Secondhand smoke outdoors, away from entrances, poses no measurable health risk. The surgeron general says avoid smoke indoors, not on a campus that encompasses acres.

I wonder how the university will protect students who live off-campus or venture into downtown Ann Arbor.

The ever-present bars and beer ads around campus are a tempatation to anyone trying to battle an alochol problem, yet they're not banned, yet. But no college students drink much, right?

Ok you say that by limiting the places that smokers will be allowed to smoke will prevent them from participating in "HEALTHY" activities? When has smoking been healthy?!! I totally agree with the plan to ban smoking. Yes, because of our laws every human being has the right to kill themselves with cigarettes; but non-smokers shouldn't have to suffer for it. COME ON! Wake up people, we all know that smoking is bad, don't try to turn this into a whole " My college is turning into a convent" thing because it's not. You want to smoke? Do it on your own time and in your own house.

We mind if you smoke.

And those who have quit - or are still in the painful process of quitting - know that walking past or through groups of smokers to enter/exit buildings are tempted by the smell. It is painful. Out of sight, out of mind! Trust me...when you are not exposed to smokers, it is whole lot easier to stay a former smoker. Best of luck in beating your addiction. Don't quit quitting. You'll be glad you did!

I disagree. They are totally different situations. Ave Maria's leads to unsafe sex, kids, and drop outs instead of alumni. This, or they have more kids after graduating, leading to higher familial expenses, and less alumni donations. Michigan's promotes healthier alumni who eventually will spend less money on cigarettes and hopefully more on alumni donations. The extra 3-5 years of life non-smokers enjoy could lead to more donations.
