I knew Scott personally way back when. We weren't friends, but I knew him. He QB'd for my HS squad. His entire family represents nothing but class. I knew his dad, too, our DC and a great teacher.

I agree with the comment that Scott would have worked even harder to make things right next year. Whichever program picks him up will add a great DC and a great man to their team.

Just another example of the LACK of chacacter of RR...IF he had any HE would RESIGN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shafer's a class act, and did not deserve the shabby treatment he received from UM fans, or Rodriguez.

Bo would have liked Scott. He will have a great career, on his terms -- with honor and integrity.

I read some of the comments that were added after this article. I am SO SICK of hearing about RR not being a 'Michigan' man. That's just so much BS. Bo Schembechler was NOT A MICHIGAN MAN before he came to Michigan, but you've all conveniently forgotten that. And I've watched enough Michigan football under Bo to know that he was the kind of man who would admire RR for doing what he feels is right. Is RR perfect? Heck no. In fact, he may have lots of imperfections in his coaching. I mean, that seems pretty obvious after this season. But stop using this dumb excuse that he's not 'a Michigan Man' as the reason he didn't have a successful season. You all must be really naive if you think every college football coach out there has more character and better values than RR. I think they ALL have their issues, and their weaknesses. Wake up and realize RR is here to stay.....at least for awhile.

For that coach Mallory to say that he is angry with Rich Rodriguez...is just silly. He isn't on the inside of what went on this season, so he has no idea if Shafer 'resigned' or whether he was pressured to leave. It's out of line for this coach from some other school to criticize a decision that he has no knowledge of, and no part of. He's just sticking his nose in business that isn't his. Does he just feel the need to jump on the 'let's criticize RR bandwagon'?? Useless comments, that means absolutely nothing.

he was fired, can you see this, someone had to take the blame, he got canned.

Blame an assistant? How about blaming the UM President and the Athletic Direcor for this mess. Rodriquez might turn out to be successful 5 years from now, but at what price? Next will be academic scandels, recruiting violations, etc. to do anything to win. He is not a Michigan man. They need a Michigan man or soon the prestige of UM Fotball will go down the tube! I think Rod has a number of character issues that will be exposed over the next season.

A couple points:

Shafer declines to answer questions? Minus Q&A, there's no "interview." He's issuing a statement.

He's also being thrown under the bus...beep-beep.

While I agree with Mallory's sentiments that Rodriguez is not the right guy to coach Michigan and his lack of character overall--I don't think Mallory is realistic. I do think that Shafer SO underachieved this year, essentially setting a record for low defensive production in 120 years of M football, that he had to go.

By allowing him to resign, Rodriguez continues that myth that Michigan doesn't fire assistants, just like Carr allowed Jim Boccher to resign a few years ago from a woeful special teams performance game after game. (Too bad Carr didn't do that with his offensive line coach and offensive coordinator, though). I do think accountability must be had not just for head coach but for assistants, too--but it begs the next question--

Why didn't Rod just keep Ron English around? He knew the team, he had them perform adequately, and it's not like Rod had a relationship with Shafer anyway. I think it speaks to the poor leadership of Rod overall, and now we will see. It also speaks to poor decision making--that should indict Rod just as much. How could he have messed up that big of a decision?
