Unfortunately, Asians, especially the ones that are considered 2nd-class by other Asians (i.e., Vietnamese, Flips, Cambodians, etc.) ALWAYS call the race card.
Your so right we also use that money, to plain our trips. We count the money always with managment, and keep count of the people walking in thru the door. I also heard the org. was very intoxiacted and screaming and yealing, pretty much makeing a scene @ the club. From what I was told and thru people I know the CSA has been working with Studio for almost 10 years and has never had any issues, These comments were from past board members. Boycott? I was there Friday nite it was a large mix of people including, a couple large groups of asians. I mean really you can call this club what you want? But racist no.
I heard a rumor Studio is going to stop dealing with fundraising orgs, which hurts us we have had many events there. The first step to us throwing a party is that our board members do NOT drink alchol. I understand that its a party but how hard is it to count people walking in the door? Organize yourself next time.
Last time we organized an event we had a person standing at the door with a guest list counting our guests and members throughout the whole night. At the end of the day we got our fair share based on the list we made. Studio 4 is shady, and when you deal with shady organizations, you definitely have to keep a proper tab on your own guests. It's really unfortunate, but actually I don't see the comments as overly racist, and usually a conflict takes 2 hands to clap. Both parties must have provoked each other, and I think that we should perhaps be a tad more lenient on Studio 4. After all, what kind of gentlemanly and gracious behavior do you expect from a bar owner?
Who cares, I go to Studio every Thursday. Its the best time in Ann Arbor!
I was there that night with a bunch of football players, it seemed to me that the asian org, were extremely intoxicated. The girl Ashely Manzano was screaming and yealling out of control, I thought to myself how does a person trying to conduct buisniess act this way? I would of went off on her also. As far as Studio being racist, thats crazy, I know so many different orgs that have raised so much money there. The FASA Org is very small, from what I understand this is not the first time they have cried about being treated unfair, they claimed the same thing in Lansing. You can boycott Studio if you want but I will be there Dec. 9 for the Noar event(if any want dosnt know thats a black org)
Who selected Studio 4 ?
Spitting on Ms. Manzano is an offense and should be easy to prove.
This offensive and assaultive behavior as being a result of racial bias is more difficult to prove.
Fellow Asians, where are your lawyers and law students ?
As another former employee of Studio 4 (and not a promoter), I am not at all surprised that this happened.
Jeff Mangray was probably frustrated that the student groups had lower turnout than they expected that night, and he was probably frustrated that these groups never really bring much of a turnout. From his perspective, why pay the student groups for people they aren't responsible for bringing?
Reese Mangray was probably drunk at the end of the night when the conversation occurred, and, equally frustrated that no one showed up, took it out on these poor students.
They may not be racist, but they are extremely greedy.
Studio 4 does have an extremely distinguished history of shady business practices: rape, all-out brawls, failing to pay employees (like me), operating a 2nd bar without an extra liquor license, and any number of other deplorable things. The place is a pit, its full of coke and other drugs, and I personally wouldn't go there anymore for fear of my own safety.
These student groups should ask themselves at what moral/ethical cost they are holding these fundraisers at Studio 4. It may be a noble goal to raise money for your group, but it isn't noble to do it at a place like Studio 4.
I would also like to add that the writer of the article was given the full names of various promoters for Studio 4, as well as their phone numbers (mine included), to gain adequate insight into this situation. None of us were called to provide comments about our personal experiences with the Mangray family and the club itself. I'm not sure how valuable this story is seeing that it is completely one-sided and biased. DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST NEXT TIME.
I have worked for Studio 4 doing promotions for the past 3 years, and have never been treated unfairly. The Mangray family has always treated us with the utmost respect, and has gone far out of their way on numerous occasions to accommodate our needs specifically as well as the needs of the customers that we represent. There has not been a single occasion on which we have not been paid our FAIR commission for the night's turnout. Often times we leave our money with the Mangray's for weeks before picking it up from the club, and each time we collect our payment we are shown the numbers for the night that we promote for and based on the size of the incoming crowd, we are paid in full for those people who were not on our guest list (i.e. did not have to pay cover to come inside).
I have spoken with Jeff personally about this matter and he is shocked and appalled by the way that the information was manipulated and spun negatively to attack to the club and its management. On certain nights, there just isn't that large of a turnout, and when we have a larger amount of people coming in on our guest list, our commission is much lower. Also, the emphasis that the writer of this article is placing on Jeff's comment, "Where are all of the Asians?" is completely exaggerated and taken out of context. Of all people in the nightclub business here in Ann Arbor, Jeff and Reese are the last people that I would call racist or prejudiced! They themselves are Indian and have had their fair share of feats with the court system in Ann Arbor to fight the prejudice coming from the Ann Arbor police force recently this year.
It's unfortunate that the turnout for this multicultural event was not large enough, but it doesn't make sense for the Mangray's to pay the student group out of their own pockets in order to compensate for what I see as poor promotional efforts on the student group's part.
It's pretty obvious from the number of student groups that have come forward with complaints about not getting compensated on time, or not in the percentage stipulated in the contract. I would say your experience is more the exception rather than the rule.
Also, while it's quite possible that more effort could have been made in promoting the event, that point is really moot because it's not like these events are just simple charity fundraisers that Studio 4 does out of the goodness of its owners hearts. It's still a business deal with contracts stipulating exactly how the money is going to be distributed at the end of the night. FASA and CSA had a SIGNED contract stating that they would get 50% of the cover for the night, and nowhere did it mention the cover for only a specific group of people.
Even if we were to take the racial comments (and remember that anyone can be racially discriminatory and say racially discriminatory things)it's clear that the Mangray's behavior both at the time of the incident and after, are far from professional.
Plus, while you might not have gotten all the information, it's more than just race, Reese spat at a woman and repeatedly called her a "skank ass bitch." As a woman, I find this incredibly offensive regardless of the race of the person saying it.
Kiss my Korean a$$ Studio 4... Count that on your tally sheet.
I agree that "shame on students" is an unacceptable and slightly offensive way of responding to this article. I can, however, see how one can arrive at that conclusion. This article is poorly written and frames the situation in a way that makes the reader more sympathetic to the club management. The quote from VSA president, Kevin Duong, for example is incomplete. Gregg-Geist neglects to mention that the VSA budget has suffered severely as a result of Studio's irresponsibility and that the club party Duong alludes to is the main source of income for VSA's annual cultural show. As someone who attended the event, I can attest to the fact that there many constructive and insightful comments made by attendees that were completely left out of the article and, as a result, the reasons why the Studio incident is deserving of national attention and outrage is completely lost.
A representative from the NAACP, for example, commented that we DO NOT live in a color blind society, despite what ignorant, manipulative, and poorly informed discourse suggests. The fact that the owner of Studio is a person of color who used his racial background to counter accusations of racism (Gregg-Geist also leaves this out of his story..) actually affirms that race is indeed a factor in the incident.
Mangray is delusional. Studio DOES have a repuation among the student body for poor business practice and all-around shadiness (does anyone else recall the fact that someone was RAPED there on New Years?). As FASA president Ashley Manzano stated, "this was the straw that broke the camel's back." Mangray needs to formally apologize not only to FASA and CSA, but all other organizations he has cheated out of money and discriminated against. Until then, please PLEASE do not patronize Studio 4.
Studio 4 should just close. It'd be better for them and everyone else.
Saying "shame on the student groups" is an inappropriate case of blaming the victim. Instead of placing the accountability on Studio 4 for this inexcusable actions, the focus is shifted entirely towards these students and what they could have done. As a U-M community member, I think that the idea of finding fault with the students is hard to swallow.
This venue's management is willfully ignorant and racially clueless. To think that Asians only hang out with Asians or is friends with only Asians is a view that has no basis on reality - but the worst offense here is to bully the student groups into accepting less than what was originally agreed upon. The owner probably thought the student groups would just swallow the loss and leave quietly, I am glad they are standing up for themselves and shining some light onto the shady dealings of the manager. Students should avoid working with this venue in the future.
Shame on the student groups for choosing such a repugnant venue in the first place. Studio 4, the public record shows, has been rife with problems. This story only furthers the argument that this club is a public nuisance, and its continued operation is to the detriment of the community. Currently, Studio 4 is under investigation by the liquor control board over an array of allegations including allowing minors to consume alcohol, over serving patrons, fights in the bar, firearms violence involving patrons , and improper use of a weapon by staff.
Read a recent article at http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2008/03/complaints_filed_with_state_... regarding these issues.
It's still messed up that even after the fact Jeff insists it was a "miscommunication" by saying they were Asian groups so where was the "Asian turnout." Steve said himself that he had brought people and the groups had turned people out but just because they're Asian/Pacific Islander American interested groups doesn't mean the people they turn out HAVE to be Asian. If he has the gall to be so insulted that "this is the first time anything like this has ever happened," he could at least have apologized for such an aberrant occurrence. Especially since it's clearly not true...and a lot of other groups have complained about Studio's shady dealings.
