Boilermaker victory ends Michigan's bowl hopes

WEST LAFAYETTE — Michigan and Purdue entered today’s game with hopes to salvage their seasons.

The Wolverines needed to win out to extend their bowl streak and avoid their first losing season since 1967.

The Boilermakers were looking to avoid their first seven-loss season under Joe Tiller and send the retiring coach out on a high note.

A Purdue touchdown by Desmond Tardy off a hook-and-ladder with 26 seconds left in the game sent the Boilermakers off victorious, 48-42, and Michigan home for the holidays. The 90 total points in today’s contest is the most ever in Purdue-Michigan game, surpassing the 73 scored in 1982 in Ann Arbor.

The Boilermakers (1-4 Big Ten, 3-6 overall) drove the ball 73 yards in 54 seconds for the go-ahead score. Michigan (1-4 Big Ten, 2-7 overall) had tied the game just before that on a three-yard touchdown run by junior Brandon Minor, his third score of the game.

Minor’s touchdown capped a 14-play, 68-yard drive that required two penalties and a fourth-down conversion to keep it alive.

Statistically, the Boilermakers dominated play. They held a 25-15 edge in first downs and a time-of-possession advantage of 15 minutes. Purdue outgained Michigan by 222 yards.

Before the Minor touchdown drive, Purdue scored on a five-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Justin Siller. Michigan was in a position to take possession after holding Purdue to a three and out, but a 61-yard gain on a fake punt put Purdue in scoring position at the five-yard line. Two plays later, Siller found Orton in the back of the end zone to put the Boilermakers up 42-35.

Michigan tied the game at 35 on a 12-yard touchdown run by Minor with 12:19 remaining. It was his second touchdown of the afternoon. The drive started on Michigan’s 45-yard return by freshman wide receiver Martavious Odoms. Michigan’s touchdown ended a 21-point run by the Boilermakers, and it was the fourth time in the last five games the Wolverines had allowed at least 21 unanswered points.

The Boilermakers took their first lead of the game with four seconds remaining in the third quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by fifth-year senior running back Kory Sheets. He finished the game with 128 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

In its last two games, Michigan built up early leads just to see them disappear later. Today was no different. The Wolverines had a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a 73-yard punt return touchdown by Odoms and a 45-yard run by Minor.

Within eight minutes, that lead disappeared. Purdue tied the game with a Sheets touchdown run to cap off a 64-yard drive and a 10-yard touchdown run by Siller. Siller played every snap at quarterback for the Boilermakers, ending fifth-year senior quarterback Curtis Painter’s nation-best 40-game stating streak.

For the first time this year, the Wolverines were able to build another 14-point lead, only to see it disappear again. Redshirt junior LaTerryal Savoy and freshman Darryl Stonum each caught touchdown passes to put Michigan back up by 14. It was the first career touchdown pass for both.

Once again, the Boilermakers responded, scoring on a Sheets run in the final minute of the first half and another Sheets run on their first drive of the second half to go back up by 14.
