I think if Obama has chosen to be a Christian thats fine. His denial of being a muslim is absolutley legitimate, remember relegion is extremely personal . First of all Obama has to be a good president for the american people and then worry about muslims or the rest of the world. Will Saudi Arabia ever have a Jew ruler, no why should they. So why so many people are hell bent on proving that Obama is a muslim. All said and done most importantly he advocates peace and that in itself is right now single most important thing for the muslims.
Well written article, but ...
I'd like to correct a huge mistake in this article: they were *volunteers* NOT staffers who didn't want the two hijabi girls behind Obama.
Also, when he has denied being a Muslim, Obama has been quick to point out that there is nothing wrong with being a Muslim on several occasions. I think the issue that he was trying to diffuse was not the concept of being a Muslim so much as the notion that people thought he was concealing his true faith, thereby lying to the public. So on both accounts, I think your argument is very shaky at best.
Excellent work bro! I will foward this to my email list. Hey did you ever show up in State College last weekend? I didn't get a call from you!
"Perhaps the greatest indictment of Barack Obama is that he has failed to live up to the promise of Barack Obama."
I may say that 4 months from now, but not before his election, when we haven't even had a chance to see him work.
Obama is an educated man who was a professor of Constitutional law. Considering the shredding that Bush did;wiretaps, Guantanamo, I'm willing to trust Obama to restore that. Also, his speech on race was eloquent and actually tried to teach Americans something. A lot of politicians try to lead and fail, but that was actually a good example of leadership that I hope to see.
Granted, Obama could become "a used car salesman" as Imam Zaid Shakir said, so you can't be blindly optimistic. However, I set my expectations that he'll be more like Clinton, and if he can outdo Clinton, then that's fine by me.
Salaams,
great article :)
I feel like you really captured what was on my mind that I didn't know how to express.maybe you were a little bit too harsh especially when you say that we shouldnt have any hope in Obama. But it definitely needed to be said because Muslims are so afraid to speak up these days. To "Fa'iz" below, are you sure you're not on Obama's payroll? Ohh and I LOVEE the last line and the title, it's so cute, it's almost poetic. I hope to read more of your work.
Keep it up Hamdan!
~Sarah
Right on. Sort of. You are absolutely right that the entire accusatory trail of connecting Obama to Islam was completely unaddressed, and I totally agree that it was BS that everyone seemed so OK with denying those comments without unpacking them. My personal hot-topic identity/issue is LGBT rights, and Obama is certainly not the end-all epitome of what we'd like to see in terms of a policy advocate. That being said, I'm still voting for him because the likely alternative is SO much worse. I've heard a lot of rhetoric from people who are supporting alternate party candidates, which is great, but in the here and now there is a lot at stake and the reality is that one of the two major party candidates will be elected Tuesday. Obama is a good man and I trust him with representing my interests BETTER than McCain, even if not perfectly.
as-Salaam 'alaykum-
Hamdan,
I understand your feelings regarding this campaign. Political campaigns are much to complex for a candidate to stand up for all that everyone thinks is right. Everyone will not agree that everything a candidate stands for is right.
It is absurd to state that "Barack Obama has failed to live up to the promise of Barack Obama." He is a candidate for president, he has yet to be elected and you have already indicted him as a failure unto himself. Please be patient.
I don't think Barack Obama is "the one", but he has certainly displayed leadership in his run for the highest political office in the world. I believe that he is the most qualified candidate from both the Republican and Democratic sides. Inarguably, he has brought Americans into the political process that have felt disenfranchised for too long.
Here are some answers to some other questions you raised regarding Barack Obama.
Q: But what about those young girls, asked to leave an Obama rally because staffers didn't want the senator to be associated with Muslim girls in hijab?
A: It was volunteer staff that made this error in judgment. Obama apologized to them.
Q: What about the eight million hard-working Muslim-Americans who have had enough of the pervasive atmosphere of ignorance and hate?
A: We are not the only minority group facing discrimination. Even when we have, it still better than what many Muslims face as ethnic minorities in Muslim countries.
Q: Where do we fit into Obama's grand narrative?
A: Muslims are minorities come from a diverse background. Barack Obama has shown us and others that we can truly be part of the fabric of this nation.
Q: Why could it not have been the candidate himself defending the honor and patriotism of Muslim-Americans?
A: He has stood with Muslim Americans on other issues. e.g. passing halal legislation in the state of Illinois, showing support of Palestinian human rights, etc.
And I agree with the first post. There are bound to be clashes in view especially in a country as diverse in religion, race, intellect and awareness as the United States. Embrace the melting pot for what it is. If someone is calling the word Muslim a slur, then, of course Muslims are going to want to speak out against that. And they should. But isn’t that the case with any instance of ignorance? I also think you’ve romanticized the notion of the “glory” which once existed in this nation, something that “immediately” needs to be restored. Are you telling me that all earlier presidents were self-actualized, that this “city upon a hill” was once a utopia? While minority groups need to be given the respect that they deserve and while the demand for justice is perfectly understandable and expected, putting all faith into any president-to-be, however qualified he may be, is also not going to get us very far. The president can only do so much; the president is just the president. Hope is a universal concern and should not be singled out as relevant to one particular group – and it is certainly not something to be sought exclusively from the president.
"America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem." –Malcolm X.
America also needs to understand that there is no such thing as "Islamic terrorism." Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance. The worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim community is a testament to this. And there is no reason to be fearful of something so beautiful. http://www.alislam.org/terrorism.html
I think the audacity to hope at all was lost the moment the Native Americans lost their homeland. I bet they wished they had a stricter immigration policy.
In any case, five points to Hamdan for breaking away from the common mold of worshipping Obama as a rockstar-change-hope-savior (just because everyone else is doing it; we can't forget those Obama pins the kids are wearing these days). It's refreshing to see this being addressed since it is not only of concern to Muslim-Americans but to any marginalized minority who has been threatened and then deliberately violated. Yet despite this feeling of being a stranger in one's own land where we seem to have to live with paradigms of false hope, all hope is still not lost - tough times never last but tough people do.
You are mixing up a lot of things in there and this article starts sounding pretty unregulated by the middle - like a house on fire. Of course the war was stupid (may be not if someday we find out how much bush has earned through stolen iraqi oil while using public money and US lives to obtain it) but you also have to understand that Islamic terrorism is a world reality. Its sad but true and being a young religion Islam still has to go through its own right of passage to reform where it learns to live with others.
If you thought Barrack Obama coz of his "disputed" middle name will stick with Muslim Americans - I have just one thing to say - GROW UP. This is politics and its better Obama does all he can to get elected than stand up foolhardily for 2-3% of US population. Muslims are not exactly seen in friendly ways not only in US but around the world for reasons quite clear to all of us. May be you should do somethings so that Islam is seen in ways that is analogous to the origin of its name (from salam or peace) and the rest of the world will meet you mid-way.............sometime.
P.S. Comments 1, 5 and 6 before me have lot of truth in them.
I'm not sure what's so sickening about saying "I am not and never have been a Muslim." Are atheists supposed to be sickened to hear someone say "I am not and never have been atheist?" So the man isn't a follower of your religion; suddenly he's the representation of Muslim hopes let down all across America? If what you want is a MUSLIM president, when we have yet to even have a FEMALE president -- let alone a minority president -- I'm sorry to say you've probably got a long time to wait.
I hear you. I would love the day where a politician clearly and openly stands up for what she or he believes in (See Michael Douglass in American President).
That movie, however, is a great example because it shows how much our system weighs against that. Obama is doing the best that he can do while making sure that he gets elected.
After all, he knows what the alternative will bring and he does not want to be held liable for a loss. Perhaps once elected will see the Obama that we will hope exists. the one who will stand up for all Americans. Who will speak out for the marginalized groups and ensure that they can help themselves.
Yes Hamdan, thank you for your thoughts which fit with mine. I always wondered why a new style president with the slogan of change would refuse to stand up for nearly 8 million americans as if they did not exist. One day Hamdan, a president will truly stand up for what is right.
ok so Obama is a savior now?
no he's just another human who, if president will break a majority of his promises as nearly all presidents do.
its unfortunate but likely inevitable
sorry
thats my opinion
Hamdan... I'm not sure what your rant is in this article. Are you feeling slighted because Obama's name implies he could be a muslim but he is not?
I don't know about you but my vision of hope is one day perhaps people's qualifications will be determined based on merit and not what box they can check.
By the way, there's only 1 candidate in this election who has a demonstrated track record of sound fiscal policies, support for the Constitution, and presented a cogent tax and health care policy... and that person's name is NEITHER Obama nor McCain.
Hamdan, your pining for hope is something that everyone -- even a straight up, midwestern white male like myself -- longs for. At the same time, I think you almost pin too much hope on the lapel of one man: the President of the United States. In the face of political ambiguity, great women and men have taken on the yoke in order to fight for justice and equality: Martin Luther King. Desmond Tutu. Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The list is endless, and certainly doesn't include just the forty-plus men that have held the Presidency.
That said, it should be our duty to elect those that share many of our ideals, but with such a diverse and unique mixture of people, it's inevitable that one person's triumph will be another's downfall. Obama's message of hope is a so-called death knell to those in the right to life movement, for example.
