I have personal involvement in a lot of these examples. I park cars about three-quarters of a mile west of the football stadium. I don't think I would allow anyone else to take a computer unless they knew the person's name and even then, it would be pretty suspicious because the assumption would be that the person would be right back.
And I had a conversation for a girl who was doing fund raising for charity at football games for some organization. She was an attractive young student and said middle-aged men were pushovers for any of the girls. They always did well, while the boys in the organization sometimes came back empty-handed.
it would be interesting to see what happens with the results of the study if you change the person who does the asking. i wonder how a variation in race/gender/class/age or even weight of the person would affect the results.
I wrote a thesis on this when I attended U-M and ran the same type of on the ground study in the UGLI, the Grad, the Union and the law school. One important variable--and the key to our study--was in half the instances we asked someone to watch our stuff, in the other half we just walked away from it.
When we asked someone specifically to watch our belongings, most did. When we failed to ask someone to watch, almost no one intervened.
It also helped our results when the "victim" was an attractive female.
