Vincent Patsy is right that we are closer to a corporate or fascist state than capitalism. Adrienne Dusky is right that abortion should be at best a side issue for either side given the other issues going on. That said, in the debate tonight Obama said it was a moral issue, which is correct; and it arouses strong feelings. He referred to the Hippocratic Oath and left himself wide open because that oath refers specifically to abortion as something a doctor should not be involved in. And why the euphemisms? Why not get rid of the fig leaf and say what the debate is over: pro-abortion vs. anti-abortion? And forget about all the hedges over definitions and shades of opinion. Most people I know are pro-, but I think Democrats, especially in Ann Arbor, underestimate the power this issue has in other areas to sway elections. And I would say the same about race, which has totally been swept under the rug by most candidates and needs to be spoken about more freely. Both presidential candidates are pandering to all the different classes -- poverty, middle-class, rich, and beyond rich. Both talk about greed, but neither are ready to take on the last group at the expense of the first, or that greed has come to transcend class because of a sense of entitlement that is everywhere, including on campus.
