Please take a closer look at the concerns that have been expressed by "residents" regarding the 601 Forest development. I cannot address opinions expressed about past projects with which I was not involved. I speak for the neighborhood groups which have been challenging this project since its presentation to the public in March. We oppose a building that is grossly out of scale with its surroundings, one that would rob sunlight from pedestrians, retail spaces, and apartments in the neighborhood. We fully support revialization of South U., but have questioned the developer's claim that this type of "luxury" housing is needed. The developer dodged or dimissed a question raised by a Michigan Daily reporter at the initial March meeting, asking about student input. This reflects his tendency throughout the process~ to make assumptions and decisions without respect for, or input of neighbors, students and non-students.
The "battle" Ann Arbor residents picked with the 601 Forest developer reflects their concerns, & not those of the Daily's editors. This doesn't make them "wrong," only parochial. But given Ann Arborites vehement quality-of-life objections to building high-rise expensive apartments, on what basis do the Daily's editors believe that same community would embrace high-rise cheap ones?(!)
