your mom plays co rec b soccer

This article was completely biased and one-sided. As someone who plays in all levels of several IM sports, I can say that CR-B's rules on different scoring only help promote the involvement of females.

Perfect example: I played last night in a CR-B soccer game in which the opposing team scored 3 goals. All of which by men. The girls hardly touched the ball. My team, however, looks to involve our girls, many of which are excellent athletes. We also scored 3 goals. Two were by females. In a non-competitive league, ie NOT A, isn't the point to involve everyone and encourage diversity? That's just what these rules do.

It's especially important in basketball where one person, regardless of gender, can completely take over a game and not involve his/her teammates.

I also like how the writer of this article failed to even attempt to provide the other side of the story. Or how intramurals is constantly seeking input from students. Infact, they held a meeting LAST NIGHT in which students, players, officials, ect. were welcome to come and discuss intramural policies. The article also failed to mention the fact that the IM department REMOVED a rule for this upcoming basketball season that used to advantage females.

Awful journalism.

I think this school is perfect, and there is absolutely nothing I would change about it. Give up on trying to achieve equality, and just let things be. You're not going to get anything perfect, so no need to try.

I think that this is ridiculous...women are clearly worse than men at soccer, but that doesn't mean they should be rewarded for it. I mean the IM sports are just another example of how much better men are than women. I mean what other reason can their be for putting a handicap on men and awarding women double points for scoring goals. It because men are better in every way. I hate when people use words like equality and fair. Those words mean nothing.

Even though people have the choice to play in an "A" league, the discriminatory policy still exists in the "B" league. What about the people that want to play in this "B" league because they are less experienced. They are forced to adhere to the gender difference scoring policy. I think the comment regarding LSA-SG reps and MSA reps is ridiculous. How can anyone say that this is not an issue to at least be looked at? Whether the policy is changed or not, it's still something that can be investigated. If you want to change the school your own way, then you should join LSA-SG or MSA, rather than criticizing the people that try.

Why don't we have co-ed sports at the professional level or in the Olympics? Because men and women are different. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but they are different. We should be celebrating those differences, not pretending they don't exist.

The stats tell us minorities have trouble not just getting admitted to universities, but staying until graduation. So why NOT structure affirmative action more like intramural sports? Instead of just allocating some portion of admissions to minorities (spots on the team), weight their grades to reflect the handicaps they face playing the academic game (scoring goals).

If equality of outcome (& not just opportunity) is the desired goal, non-minorities need to surrender their plum perches on the grade bell curve, & get some REAL "skin in the game!"

This is why no one votes for LSA-SG or MSA or any of those things. Instead of dealing with real issues, they deal with whether or not corec soccer is fair. Great use of our tuition money. Absolutely magnificient.

Everyone must keep in mind that our University IM program is one of the few programs in the NATION that offers the participants a CHOICE of what Co-Rec rules they wish to play under. The Co-Rec A division does not give any player a particular advantage based on sex, age, height, weight, what color shoes they wear, or even if they are un-informed student writers for a mega liberal University newspaper. If a player would like, they can choose to play under those rules, or also CHOOSE to play under Co-Rec B rules. Each of these divisions have no restrictions, limits, or requirements to meet to enter. It is only decided by the team's CHOICE when they sign up.

Complaining about the right to choose...my word...can't wait to see what will come next!

Cool, so now people are generalizing against men, saying that most would not pass to a women unless they receive more points if they score. People are so great these days.......

The whole idea of intramurals is to create an environment that is fun for everyone. If the rule wasn't in place the guys would rarely past to girls. I don't believe that guys are better than girls but many people hold that belief. Not being an active part of a team is not fun and actually much more demeaning than having your goals count for two.

Since it's a co-rec league, women have to be included in order to field a team. A scoring policy that is equal between men and women will not decrease the participation at all. I think this idea is great and should have been addressed a lot earlier.

I agree with one of the posters above. The rule only seems to be here to help promote the participation of girls in IM sports. If it is insulting to some women then perhaps this rule needs to be removed and another created in order to provide some incentive for getting more girls to play.

I'm a woman, and (as someone against affirmative action, for the same reason) I agree that it's insulting. It's saying that women can't be as athletic as men, or aren't as skilled as men on the court. While there are girls who go out for IM sports who have no experience and are just doing it for fun, there are guys like that too. Maybe all newbies should get 2 points per goal. It assumes all girls are weaklings, which is ridiculous and unfair to all parties.

The Big 10 should adopt Co-Rec rules. Our football and basketball team may have a chance then.

"Benson said he grew frustrated by the scoring difference while playing IM soccer last year. After discussing the matter with Kim Buddin, a fellow LSA-SG representative and vice chair of the council's multicultural affairs committee, the two decided the disparity should be addressed."

Like maybe he should play in CR-A.

Benson said he wanted student government to vote on the issue immediately, calling the issue "urgent."

Maybe the Ann Arbor Public Schools PTA should vote on it, too. Or the Province of Ontario Congress. Or any other governing body that has no say in what the IM dept does.

This guy needs to relax and either play in A next year, or (here's a thought) don't get pissy when you lose on a girl's goal in soccer. Play defense and shut up.

This is ridiculous. The rules are in-place for a reason, they work. Find something else more important to complain about. I played in the B soccer league last year. The girls were at a disadvantage and this really leveled the playing field. Its not putting girls down, its just how it is in the B league. We had alot of girls come out on the team that had never played before, but we let them play anyways. So they score a freakin goal and get two points. How about you get all pissed about all the crime on campus. Why is it that people at UofM find things like this to throw fits about. ughhhhhh. There is real news out there....

This article sounds like it was written by some nerd who has sat behind his desk for 8 years and has never played a sport in his life. Anyone can see that these rules only promote the participation of female players in IM sports. If everyone was equal, female players would get less touches, passes, shots, etc.

Benson's quote of: “It’s frustrating when you’re (up) by one and you end up losing when a girl scores,” just sounds like he is being a sore loser because he ended up getting "beat by a girl."

Also, nice job taking an excerpt from a basketball rule book after talking about soccer throughout your whole article.

Suck it up and shut it up. Stop trying to ruin a good thing that over 20,000 participants a year love to do.

Maybe R Rod should try to get a woman quarterback. 12 points per TD would almost make our football team competitive.
