The No. 8 Michigan women’s tennis team is one of the hottest teams on campus.

A strong 4-3 victory over No. 13 Notre Dame on Thursday night extended the Wolverines' win streak to 19-straight regular season dual matches.

Last year, the Fighting Irish topped Michigan in the final singles match. But this year’s encounter in South Bend went without any drama as Michigan clinched the match before a decider was needed.

Last season’s loss to Notre Dame may have provided a little extra motivation that helped in the win on Thursday.

“Last year was a tough loss,” senior captain Whitney Taney said. “We were right in there. I think we just came in with the mindset today that it’s a new year.”

Taney helped the Wolverines (5-0 overall) get off to a perfect start as she, and fellow senior captain Rika Tatsuno beat Notre Dame’s Chrissie McGaffigan and Kristen Rafael 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Only a short while after the Wolverines secured the doubles point with another decisive win (8-2) from the No. 3 pairing of freshman Sam Critser and sophomore Mimi Nguyen. No. 1 doubles was much closer as the senior-freshman pairing of Denise Muresan and Brooke Bolender won 8-7 in a tiebreak.

Notre Dame fared better in the singles play when No. 9 Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame defeated No. 11 Denise Muresan, 6-0, 6-0, which was a blow to the Wolverines at No. 1 singles.

But Taney almost produced the same score line in Michigan's favor as she defeated No. 78 Chrissie McGaffigan 6-1, 6-0.

“I played well,” Taney said. “I felt good out there. I just wanted to get that point up on the board for our team as quickly as I could and fortunately it went my way.”

Michigan edged closer to victory with a straight-sets win at No. 6 singles from Tatsuno, and Bolender finally clinched it with another two-set win at No. 3 singles.

“Obviously I'm happy with the result,” Michigan coach Ronni Bernstein said. “A couple matches got away from us a little bit, which wasn’t great, but we stepped up. I think winning all three doubles was big and getting the doubles point with the score being 4-3. Anytime you can go to South Bend and win is a good result, so we’re happy.”
