What's in a volume number?
BY JACOB SMILOVITZ
With tomorrow’s paper, we begin the 120th volume of The Michigan Daily.
But exactly when that volume number rolls over hasn’t always been clear in the history of the Daily.
Among the bound volumes we scoured, the 2002, 2003 and 2008 editions of the Daily used the first day of school as the first day of a new volume number for the Daily.
But in 2004 and 2005, the volume number ticked up on Sept. 29, the day of the first Daily publication in 1890.
So how did we answer this question of incomparable importance?
We decided that the volume number should begin with the school year. But the years of editorial freedom, which is found under the masthead in our print edition, will remain the same until that hallowed day in late September.
