A study released by The Education Trust last week shows the University is one of the lowest-ranking colleges in the country in terms of providing financial aid to low-income and underrepresented minority students. Lester Monts, senior vice provost for academic affairs, told The Michigan Daily he was “surprised” by the findings of the report titled “Opportunity Adrift,” and reaffirmed that the University is engaging in outreach efforts to attract a diverse student body.

Student organizations and University Hospital employees have reached out to the Haitian crisis amid the catastrophic 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit the nation last week. Members of the University Survival Flight program flew two quake victims from the island to the University Hospital on Thursday, to provide them with medical care. Many student clubs on campus are also organizing various fundraisers and events to support the Haitian relief effort, like Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs recent launching of the Michigan Earthquake Action Relief
Team (M-HEART), which is aiming to unite the campus’ aid projects.

David Brandon — CEO and chairman of Domino’s Pizza — was approved as the new athletic director at the University’s Board of Regents monthly meeting on Thursday. The regents also approved renovations of Crisler Arena, which will include changes to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and will cost an estimated $20 million.

At a party hosted by Pi Lambda Phi fraternity Sunday night, four or five men arrived and began punching and hitting people — who were waiting to get into the party — with a shovel. One fraternity brother and another victim went to the University Hospital after they were injured in the fight, according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.

The University’s School of Education is currently revamping its teaching methods, switching from a theory- and academic-based approach to a more experiential one. The new program, called the Teacher Education Initiative, will give School of Education students the opportunity to make rounds — similar to the system used in medical school — observing professional teachers.
