University student killed in Wyoming hiking accident

BY DEVON THORSBY

The University has released information concerning the death of LSA senior Jillian Drow, who was killed in a reported climbing accident in the Grand Teton National Park near Jackson, Wyoming.

Drow, 21, was enrolled in a geology class at the University’s Wyoming field station, Camp Davis, and was hiking on her day off when the accident occurred, according to a spokesperson from the Office of Public Affairs and Media Relations at the University.

The spokesperson said Drow’s death is believed to be an accident, though it currently remains under investigation by the National Park Service. The spokesperson added that it is unknown whether Drow was hiking alone at the time of the accident. There were no witnesses at the time.

The University has since canceled the class Drow was enrolled in, and all other students in the class were sent home early.

The Program of the Environment has released a statement, speaking of the work Drow did at the University and in the program.

“Jillian was excited to be going to Camp Davis this summer,” the statement said. “She was awarded a field experience scholarship not only because of her high academic achievements and focus, but also in recognition of the warmth of her personality and the passion she exhibited for a program that encouraged her to go after what she wanted and reach her goals. Jillian was simply, beautiful.”

LSA Dean Terrence McDonald also released a statement, offering his condolences to Drow’s family and friends.

“We will mourn her loss and extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends,” McDonald wrote in the statement.
