University second largest employer in Detroit

BY OLIVIA CARRINO

The University is now the second largest employer in Detroit, behind Ford Motor Co. With the declining auto industry, Ford, GM and Chrysler continue to cut jobs while the University keeps growing, according to Crain’s Detroit Business 2010 Book of Lists.

In 2009, the University, along with the UM Health System, increased full-time jobs in neighboring Detroit from 25,699 to 26,433, according to the report.

The Big Three automakers have done the opposite. Crain’s said Ford had 627 fewer employees working in Detroit in 2009, GM decreased its employees from 40,142 in 2008 to 20,800 is 2009 and Chrysler dropped from 29,205 employees in 2008 to 19,882 in 2009.
