Undersized Jung Plays Big Role for Netters

At 5-foot-10 and 143 pounds, freshman Jason Jung is one of the smallest players on the No. 21 Michigan men's tennis team. And he looks even smaller next to his 6-foot-6, 220-pound doubles partner, sophomore Mike Sroczynski.

That is, until Jung swings his racket.

Despite his small size, the 55th-ranked Jung had to play a big role in Michigan's match against No. 1 Virginia yesterday, playing number-one singles against the top-ranked player in the country: Virginia's Somdev Devvarman.

But like most of the Wolverines, no matter how well he played, Virginia was too good. Michigan lost the match 5-2. And Jung lost to Devvarman, 6-2, 7-5.

After Friday's 4-3 upset victory over No. 16 Pepperdine, which came down to junior Andrew Mazlin's third set, Michigan coach Bruce Berque said he wasn't sure if Jung or senior captain Matko Maravic would play against Devvarman.

But Devvarman had beaten Maravic before, so it was Jung who stepped onto center court yesterday with Michigan leading 1-0 after clinching the doubles point.

"As a freshman to come in and play number one or number two at this level and be winning as much as he does and be in the rankings the way he is and to be such a great example in terms of his work ethic and his attitude
