'U' purchases renewable energy certificates

BY OLIVIA CARRINO

The University announced today that it has purchased renewable energy certificates from DTE Energy to support the development of alternative energy resources. The move represents a part of the University’s environmental and energy strategy.

"We are excited to announce this initiative with our partner, DTE Energy, as we continue our commitment here at the University of Michigan to seek out and implement alternative energy programs that are consistent with our position as a leader in sustainable energy," said Rich Robben, executive director for plant operations at U-M. "The benefits of this program are significant.”

The DTE Energy GreenCurrents program uses two wind turbines to produce the purchased renewable energy for the University. The energy output of the turbines is equal to 2 percent of the University’s total electricity consumption.

Both DTE Energy and University engineers are currently working on many energy conservation initiatives.
