'U' launches website for 50th anniversary of Peace Corps
BY OLIVIA CARRINO
The University recently launched a website celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps. The site not only celebrates the past, but also looks to the future.
Many events have been planned for the upcoming year that focus on the anniversary. These include a national symposium on the future of international service and a commemoration of then Senator John F. Kennedy’s speech on the steps of the Michigan Union.
Since 1960, when Kennedy spoke to University students about global peace and justice, the Peace Corps has grown into a signature program that defines international volunteer services. Peace Corps volunteers have included 2,200 University graduates who have lived abroad, working for world peace by helping others.
