A Tough Cell

Published September 14, 2004

Rackham students Elisabeth Ashman and Nike Bharucha, both in the
department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology,
prepare to harvest E. coli bacteria cells yesterday. The cells will
undergo a process to separate their two membranes. By looking at
proteins specific to the outer layer, the researchers hope to aid
in the study of neurodegenerative diseases.  (MIKE
