The victims reported that the men jumped out of bushes near the dorm at approximately 3:10 a.m. and demanded they give them "everything they got."
One victim fled the scene unharmed, while a second escaped after dropping his backpack.
The suspects physically assaulted the third victim before taking his backpack, the University's Department of Public Safety reported.
The injured victim refused medical treatment at the scene.
The victims described the suspects as black males in their early to mid-20's, around 6'0" tall and weighing between 220 and 250 pounds.
The victims told DPS that the suspects were all dressed in dark-colored shirts.
Two were wearing "shiny" shorts, and the other three wore dark-colored jeans.
DPS is currently investigating the robbery and has not yet determined any suspects, DPS spokeswoman Diane Brown said.
The victims are not University students, Brown said.
The suspects were last seen heading toward the Diag on foot.
DPS later recovered the backpacks, which were left on the ground near University President Mary Sue Coleman's residence on South University Avenue.
The department is still investigating whether items are damaged or missing.
A University-wide crime alert was issued Friday morning asking anyone with information about the crime to contact DPS.
The crime alert was the first issued since March.
If the suspects are caught, they could face a 15-year felony charge for unarmed robbery with an assault.
