SportsWednesday Column: No more FCS teams in the Big House, please

The Delaware State Hornets, seconds after losing 63-6 to Michigan, trotted out to midfield in their ill-fitting Riddell jerseys, some with smiles on their faces. Two players met at the corner of the block ‘M’ to say a quick “good game.".

One had handwarmers, a muff and a heat-trapping Under Armour shirt. The other was rubbing his hands quickly over his forearms to try and stay warm on the brisk Fall afternoon.

You can probably guess whose helmet was stamped with a script “State.”

The Michigan player offered his handwarmers in a friendly gesture, but the Delaware State player did not accept them. The scene, like the game in general, was a classic case of Haves vs. Have Nots.

I’m sure the $550,000 check the Delaware State Athletic Department received for playing this game will do great things for the program. And I don’t want to knock them for wanting a fat payday, but is this not a perfect example of the hypocrisy of college sports?

College football is, after all, about winning — not about money — right? Well, the Hornets’ payday was apparently worth two games. Not only did they get spanked by Michigan, but they had to forfeit a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game against North Carolina A&T to do it.

Delaware State head coach Al Levan said after the game that the forfeit wasn’t planned and that he would have never scheduled the Michigan game if he knew it would have happened. And for their part, the players said their day in the Big House was a positive experience — but still.

All of this is a microcosm of a much larger problem. Why are FBS vs. FCS games allowed in the first place?

Or should I say Haves vs. Have Nots?

Sure, every year you see a few FCS teams notch a season-making victory over an FBS team — but almost all of those are in the first few weeks of the season. With 22 fewer allotted scholarships than Michigan, Delaware State is not only a bad FCS team, but the impact of the inevitable injuries that occur during the football season are compounded when you’re playing a team as Michigan is to the Hornets.

I mean, really:

Michigan 63, Delaware State 6

Oklahoma State 56, Grambling State 6

Florida 62, Charleston Southern 3

Boston College 54, Northeastern 0

Need I go on? These games are useless.

Yes, it’s great that you get a warm, fuzzy feeling when fifth-string quarterback Jack Kennedy gets to take the last snap of the game, and the stories that Michigan players have told about fifth-year senior Ohene Opong-Owusu are certainly entertaining. Or try to justify this game with “Oh, they really needed this after two tough losses.”

But this is a black eye on Division I college football. NFL teams would never consider playing for keeps against a Canadian Football League team.

It’s a waste of a game, it’s a waste of fans’ money and it’s a waste of time for everyone involved.
