Paul Shaffer said he is "very proud" of his son, Army Pfc. Jeffrey P. Shaffer, who was 21, but wondered how much longer U.S. troops will have to remain in Iraq.
"Our boys are getting shot up left and right," the father told The Grand Rapids Press for a story published Thursday. "It's like a turkey shoot. I and everybody I talk to are sick of it.
"My son was a very, very brave young man. I take my hat off to him. But I say if we are going to be there, let's do it the American way. If they want a war, I say let's take it to them and get it over with."
Jeffrey Shaffer died Sept. 13 when a roadside bomb detonated near his vehicle in Ramadi, Iraq. The Harrison, Ark., resident was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division of Bamberg, Germany.
A funeral will be held in Texas, where his mother, Lisa Adams, lives. Shaffer is also survived by a 2-year-old daughter.
